METHOD OF MAKING A FIBROUS PREFORM AND A FIBROUS PREFORM THUS OBTAINED - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240051256 titled 'METHOD OF MAKING A FIBROUS PREFORM AND A FIBROUS PREFORM THUS OBTAINED

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method of making a fibrous preform using carbon fibers or fibers of a carbon precursor. The method involves superposing multiple layers of these fibers according to a predefined axis to form a multilayer body. The multilayer body is then needle-punched in a direction parallel to the superposition axis, aligning the fibers parallel to the axis. Optionally, multiple needle-punched multilayer bodies can be superposed with each other.

  • The method involves superposing layers of carbon fibers or fibers of a carbon precursor to create a multilayer body.
  • The multilayer body is then needle-punched in a direction parallel to the superposition axis.
  • This aligns the fibers parallel to the superposition axis, resulting in a needle-punched multilayer body.
  • Multiple needle-punched multilayer bodies can be superposed with each other.

Potential Applications:

  • Manufacturing of carbon fiber composites for various industries such as aerospace, automotive, and sports equipment.
  • Production of carbon fiber preforms for use in the construction of lightweight and high-strength structures.

Problems Solved:

  • The method allows for the efficient alignment of carbon fibers or fibers of a carbon precursor in a desired direction, improving the mechanical properties of the resulting preform.
  • Needle-punching helps to interlock the fibers, enhancing the structural integrity of the preform.

Benefits:

  • Improved control over fiber alignment, resulting in enhanced mechanical properties of the final product.
  • Increased efficiency in the manufacturing process, reducing production time and costs.
  • Ability to create complex and customized fiber architectures for specific applications.

Original Abstract Submitted

a method of making a fibrous preform in carbon and/or fibres of a carbon precursor may include superposing at least two layers of carbon fibres and/or fibres of a carbon precursor according to a predefined superposition axis z so as to form a multilayer body. the method may also include needle-punching via least one first needle-punching device the multilayer body in a needle-punching direction substantially parallel to the superposition axis z to arrange at least part of the fibres parallel to the superposition axis z, so as to obtain a needle-punched multilayer body. an optional step may include superposing with each other according to the superposition axis z two or more of the needle-punched multilayer bodies, obtained separately by applying the above steps.
