Implant with Improved Bone Contact - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240050238 titled 'Implant with Improved Bone Contact

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes an intervertebral implant with an open lattice structure made of elongate struts. It also includes a contact surface that confronts a bone plate, with a node formed by the intersection of two struts. The implant has an enlarged contact member at the node, which has a flattened outer-facing surface as part of the contact surface. The contact member extends beyond the node, and portions of the struts extend inward towards the core of the implant.

  • The intervertebral implant has an open lattice structure made of elongate struts.
  • It includes a contact surface that confronts a bone plate.
  • The contact surface has a node formed by the intersection of two struts.
  • The implant has an enlarged contact member at the node.
  • The contact member has a flattened outer-facing surface as part of the contact surface.
  • The contact member extends beyond the node.
  • Portions of the struts extend inward towards the core of the implant.

Potential Applications:

  • Spinal fusion surgeries
  • Treatment of degenerative disc diseases
  • Correcting spinal deformities

Problems Solved:

  • Provides stability and support to the spine
  • Facilitates bone growth and fusion
  • Reduces pain and discomfort associated with spinal conditions

Benefits:

  • Enhanced structural integrity of the implant
  • Improved contact with the bone plate
  • Promotes bone growth and fusion
  • Minimizes post-operative complications and pain

Original Abstract Submitted

an intervertebral implant having an open lattice structure formed by a plurality of elongate struts, including a first strut and a second strut. in addition, the body includes a contact surface configured to confront a bone plate, the contact surface including a node defined by an intersection of the first strut and the second strut. the implant includes an enlarged contact member disposed at the node, wherein the enlarged contact member has a substantially flattened outer-facing surface forming part of the contact surface. in addition, the enlarged contact member has an outer perimeter edge that extends beyond the node, and at least a portion of the first strut and at least a portion of the second strut extend inward from the enlarged contact member toward a central core of the body.
