METHOD, APPARATUS AND SYSTEM FOR NEURAL NETWORK HEARING AID - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240048922 titled 'METHOD, APPARATUS AND SYSTEM FOR NEURAL NETWORK HEARING AID

Simplified Explanation

The disclosed patent application describes a method, system, and apparatus for improving a user's understanding of speech in real-time conversations by processing audio through a neural network contained in a hearing device. The hearing device can be a headphone or hearing aid.

  • The apparatus includes a controller that receives an incoming signal and provides a controller output signal.
  • The apparatus also includes neural network engine (NNE) circuitry that is in communication with the controller. The NNE circuitry can be activated by the controller and is configured to generate an NNE output signal from the controller output signal.
  • Additionally, the apparatus includes digital signal processing (DSP) circuitry that receives either the controller output signal or the NNE circuitry output signal to generate a processed signal.
  • The controller determines the processing path of the controller output signal through either the DSP or the NNE circuitries based on predefined parameters, incoming signal characteristics, and NNE circuitry feedback.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Improving speech comprehension in real-time conversations for individuals with hearing impairments.
  • Enhancing audio quality and clarity in headphones or hearing aids.
  • Assisting individuals in noisy environments by filtering out background noise and focusing on speech.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Difficulty in understanding speech in real-time conversations, especially for individuals with hearing impairments.
  • Poor audio quality and clarity in headphones or hearing aids.
  • Challenges in distinguishing speech from background noise in noisy environments.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved speech comprehension and communication for individuals with hearing impairments.
  • Enhanced audio experience for headphone or hearing aid users.
  • Better ability to focus on speech in noisy environments, leading to improved communication.

Original Abstract Submitted

the disclosure generally relates to a method, system and apparatus to improve a user's understanding of speech in real-time conversations by processing the audio through a neural network contained in a hearing device. the hearing device may be a headphone or hearing aid. in one embodiment, the disclosure relates to an apparatus to enhance incoming audio signal. the apparatus includes a controller to receive an incoming signal and provide a controller output signal; a neural network engine (nne) circuitry in communication with the controller, the nne circuitry activatable by the controller, the nne circuitry configured to generate an nne output signal from the controller output signal; and a digital signal processing (dsp) circuitry to receive one or more of controller output signal or the nne circuitry output signal to thereby generate a processed signal; wherein the controller determines a processing path of the controller output signal through one of the dsp or the nne circuitries as a function of one or more of predefined parameters, incoming signal characteristics and nne circuitry feedback.
