MODIFIED VEHICLE TRANSMISSION HYDRAULIC VALVE CIRCUIT FOR FORWARD SPRAG PROTECTION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240026970 titled 'MODIFIED VEHICLE TRANSMISSION HYDRAULIC VALVE CIRCUIT FOR FORWARD SPRAG PROTECTION

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a modified hydraulic circuit for an OEM vehicle transmission. The transmission includes a forward clutch, a forward clutch hub, a forward sprag, an overrun clutch, and an overrun clutch hub. The forward clutch and forward sprag provide a link to a planetary gear train to propel the vehicle forward. The hydraulic circuit includes a valve body with multiple passages and a separator plate, as well as various shift valves.

  • The modified hydraulic circuit includes blockages in certain passages to control the flow of fluid.
  • The blockage in the passage connecting the 2-3 shift valve to the overrun clutch affects the operation of the transmission.
  • The blockage in the passage connecting the gear shift valve to the 2-3 shift valve also affects the transmission operation.
  • The removal of a movable element from the first check valve body and the addition of a passage from the gear shift valve to the overrun clutch via the first check valve body further modify the hydraulic circuit.
  • In the D4 mode, the forward clutch and overrun clutch are applied and locked to each other, rendering the forward sprag clutch ineffective.

Potential Applications:

  • This modified hydraulic circuit can be applied to OEM vehicle transmissions to improve their performance and efficiency.
  • It can be used in various types of vehicles, including cars, trucks, and SUVs.

Problems Solved:

  • The modified hydraulic circuit solves the problem of ineffective forward sprag clutch in the D4 mode.
  • It improves the overall operation and functionality of the transmission.

Benefits:

  • The modified hydraulic circuit enhances the performance and efficiency of the vehicle transmission.
  • It provides smoother shifting and improved power delivery.
  • The modified circuit ensures better control and reliability of the transmission system.

Original Abstract Submitted

a modified hydraulic circuit for an oem vehicle transmission, which transmission has a forward clutch, a forward clutch hub and a forward sprag having an inner sprag race and an outer sprag race, an overrun clutch and an overrun clutch hub, the forward clutch and the forward sprag providing a link to a planetary gear train to propel the vehicle forward, the forward clutch hub defining the outer sprag race, the overrun clutch hub defining the inner sprag race, a hydraulic valve body having a plurality of passages and a separator plate, and a 1-2 shift valve, a 2-3 shift valve, a 3-4 shift valve and a 3-4 relay valve, and a gear shift valve, includes a blockage in the passage fluidically connecting the 2-3 shift valve to the overrun clutch, a blockage in the passage fluidically connecting the gear shift valve to the 2-3 shift valve, removal of a movable element from the first check valve body and a passage from the gear shift valve to the overrun clutch via the first check valve body, wherein when operating in the d4 mode, the forward clutch is applied and the overrun clutch is applied and are locked to one another, such that the forward sprag clutch is ineffective. a method of modifying the hydraulic circuit is disclosed.
