METHOD FOR MAKING LOW CARBON INTENSITY HYDROGEN - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240025737 titled 'METHOD FOR MAKING LOW CARBON INTENSITY HYDROGEN

Simplified Explanation

The present disclosure describes a method for reducing the carbon intensity of hydrogen production by replacing a portion of non-renewable gaseous feedstock with a biomethane feedstock. The non-renewable gaseous feedstock being replaced can either be fed to methane reforming or used to generate heat for the reforming process. The fraction of non-renewable gaseous feedstock replaced by biomethane is less than 50% and is determined by a specific equation.

  • The method aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change by substituting non-renewable gaseous feedstock with a more sustainable biomethane feedstock.
  • The biomethane feedstock used in the process has a carbon intensity value ranging from 15 g coeq/mj to -500 g coeq/mj.
  • The process is designed to be implemented at hydrogen production facilities.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Hydrogen production facilities can adopt this method to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to sustainable energy production.
  • The biomethane feedstock can be sourced from renewable sources such as organic waste or biomass, promoting the use of waste-to-energy solutions.
  • This method can be integrated into existing hydrogen production processes without significant modifications.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Reduces the carbon intensity of hydrogen production, addressing the environmental impact associated with non-renewable gaseous feedstock.
  • Provides a more sustainable alternative to traditional hydrogen production methods, contributing to climate change mitigation efforts.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Decreases greenhouse gas emissions by replacing non-renewable gaseous feedstock with a biomethane feedstock.
  • Promotes the use of renewable energy sources by utilizing biomethane derived from organic waste or biomass.
  • Supports the transition towards a more sustainable and low-carbon hydrogen economy.

Original Abstract Submitted

the present disclosure provides a method for reducing the carbon intensity of hydrogen by replacing, at a hydrogen production facility, a fraction of a non-renewable gaseous feedstock with a biomethane feedstock, wherein the non-renewable gaseous feedstock replaced is (a) a feedstock fed to methane reforming and/or (b) a feedstock used to generate heat for the reforming in the hydrogen production, and wherein the fraction of the non-renewable gaseous feedstock replaced by the biomethane feedstock is less than 50% and is at least r defined by equation a herein. the disclosed process for reducing the carbon intensity of hydrogen is designed to reduce greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions and mitigate climate change. the biomethane feedstock in some examples has a carbon intensity (ci) value within a range that is between 15 g coeq/mj and −500 g coeq/mj.
