AUTOMATIC DOOR - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240011343 titled 'AUTOMATIC DOOR

Simplified Explanation

The invention is an automatic door and method for controlling it. It includes a door controller unit that controls the door drive. There is also a monitoring system with at least two door sensors mounted on opposite sides of the door. Each sensor has a scanning unit that monitors a safety area. When an object is detected within the sensor safety areas, a safety signal is sent to the door controller unit.

The innovation in this patent is the introduction of a "restricted mode" in the monitoring system. After a predefined timespan of no detection within the sensor safety areas, the monitoring system switches to the restricted mode. In this mode, at least one sensor safety area is set to a restricted area. The safety signal is then provided only when an object is detected within the restricted area. Once a detection occurs in the restricted area, the monitoring system goes back to the normal mode.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Automatic doors in public buildings, hospitals, and shopping malls
  • Access control systems in secure facilities
  • Industrial settings where automated doors are used for safety and efficiency

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Enhances safety by detecting objects in the sensor safety areas and providing a safety signal to the door controller unit
  • Reduces false alarms by switching to the restricted mode after a predefined timespan of no detection
  • Improves efficiency by allowing the monitoring system to focus on specific areas of interest

Benefits of this technology:

  • Increased safety for individuals using the automatic door
  • Minimized disruptions caused by false alarms
  • Optimal use of resources by focusing on areas where detection is most critical

Original Abstract Submitted

the invention relates to an automatic door and method for controlling an automatic door (), comprising a door controller unit () for controlling a door, acting on a door drive; further comprising a monitoring system () comprising at least two door sensors () mounted on two opposite sides of the door, as seen in passage direction, where each of said sensors () comprises a scanning unit () that monitors a sensor safety area, where a safety signal is applied to the door controller unit upon detection of an object within the sensor safety areas of said sensors. according to the invention after a predefined timespan (tl) of no detection within said sensor safety areas of said sensors, the monitoring system () is set to a “restricted mode” in which at least one sensor safety area is set to a restricted area, where the safety signal is then provided upon detection of an object within the restricted area, where further, once a detection in the restricted area occurs, the monitoring system is set back to an unrestricted “normal” mode.
