DIRECT AIR CAPTURE CONTACTOR FOR CARBON UPTAKE, AND METHODS OF OPERATING THE SAME - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240009617 titled 'DIRECT AIR CAPTURE CONTACTOR FOR CARBON UPTAKE, AND METHODS OF OPERATING THE SAME

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes systems, devices, and methods for capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air.

  • A device is described that includes a platform with a top portion and a bottom portion.
  • The platform has a plurality of orifices on the top portion, which are configured to dispense liquid towards a tray.
  • An elevation mechanism is included in the device, which can move the platform vertically.
  • An actuator is also included, which can move laterally along the bottom side of the top portion of the platform and urge the tray to move laterally.
  • The bottom portion of the device supports the tray as it moves laterally.
  • The elevation mechanism can be driven by either a chain or a linear actuator powered by a motor.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Carbon capture and storage: The device can be used to capture CO2 from the air and store it for later use or disposal.
  • Climate change mitigation: By capturing CO2 from the air, this technology can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change.
  • Industrial processes: The captured CO2 can be used in various industrial processes, such as carbonation of beverages or enhanced oil recovery.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Carbon dioxide removal: The device provides a solution for capturing CO2 directly from the ambient air, which can help address the problem of increasing CO2 levels in the atmosphere.
  • Scalability: The described system can be scaled up to capture large amounts of CO2, making it suitable for industrial-scale applications.
  • Efficiency: The combination of the orifices, tray, and actuator allows for efficient capture and movement of CO2, reducing energy consumption and costs.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Carbon neutrality: By capturing CO2 from the air, this technology can help achieve carbon neutrality by offsetting emissions from various sources.
  • Versatility: The device can be used in various settings and industries, providing flexibility in carbon capture applications.
  • Cost-effectiveness: The described system offers a cost-effective solution for capturing CO2, making it economically viable for widespread adoption.

Original Abstract Submitted

embodiments described herein relate to systems, devices, and methods for uptake of cofrom ambient air. in some aspects, a device can include a platform with a top portion and a bottom portion, an elevation mechanism configured to move the platform vertically, a plurality of orifices defined by the top portion of the platform, the plurality of orifices configured to dispense liquid toward a tray, and an actuator configured to move laterally along a bottom side of the top portion of the platform, the actuator configured to urge the tray to move laterally. in some embodiments, the bottom portion can support the tray as the tray moves laterally. in some embodiments, the elevation mechanism can include at least one of a chain or a linear actuator driven by a motor.
