ONBOARD COMMUNICATION SYSTEM, CENTER DEVICE, VEHICLE-SIDE SYSTEM, AND METHOD FOR VERIFYING UPDATE DATA OF ONBOARD COMMUNICATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18537350 titled 'ONBOARD COMMUNICATION SYSTEM, CENTER DEVICE, VEHICLE-SIDE SYSTEM, AND METHOD FOR VERIFYING UPDATE DATA OF ONBOARD COMMUNICATION

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes an onboard communication system for vehicles that allows for the secure transmission and verification of update data to electronic control units.

  • The center device transmits update data as a distribution package to the electronic control unit via a streaming method.
  • The master device in the vehicle receives the distribution package and transfers the update data to the electronic control unit.
  • The electronic control unit writes the update data to a storage unit.
  • The center device also sends a hash value for the update data to the master device.
  • The electronic control unit calculates a hash value for the update data and sends it to the master device.
  • The master device compares the hash values from the center device and the electronic control unit to verify the integrity of the update data.

Potential Applications

The technology can be applied in automotive industry for updating software in vehicles, ensuring secure and reliable transmission of data.

Problems Solved

This technology solves the problem of securely updating software in vehicles without the risk of data corruption or tampering during transmission.

Benefits

- Secure and reliable transmission of update data - Verification of data integrity - Efficient updating process for electronic control units in vehicles

Potential Commercial Applications

"Secure Update Data Transmission System for Vehicles" can be used in automotive companies for updating software in vehicles, ensuring data integrity and security during the transmission process.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be the use of over-the-air (OTA) updates in vehicles, but this system provides an additional layer of security by verifying the integrity of the update data through hash values.

Unanswered Questions

How does this technology impact the overall efficiency of vehicle maintenance processes?

This technology can streamline the process of updating software in vehicles, reducing the time and resources required for maintenance tasks.

What are the potential cybersecurity implications of implementing this technology in vehicles?

Implementing this technology can enhance cybersecurity measures in vehicles by ensuring the secure transmission and verification of update data, reducing the risk of cyber attacks.

Original Abstract Submitted

An onboard communication system includes a center device that transmits update data as a distribution package by a streaming manner to an electronic control unit installed in a vehicle, a master device that is installed in the vehicle and receives the distribution package and transfer the update data to the electronic control unit, and the electronic control unit that writes the update data transferred from the master device to a storage unit. The center device also transmits a hash value calculated for the update data to the master device. The electronic control unit calculates a hash value for the update data and transmits the hash value to the master device. The master device compares the hash value transmitted from the center device with the hash value transmitted from the electronic control unit to verify integrity of the update data.
