ENCODER, A DECODER AND CORRESPONDING METHODS OF DEBLOCKING FILTER ADAPTATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18534764 titled 'ENCODER, A DECODER AND CORRESPONDING METHODS OF DEBLOCKING FILTER ADAPTATION

Simplified Explanation

The deblocking method described in the abstract is used to improve the quality of images during encoding and decoding processes by filtering the boundary between two transform blocks within a coding block.

  • The method involves determining the strength of the boundary between two transform blocks based on the presence of non-zero transform coefficients.
  • De-blocking filtering is then applied to the boundary based on the calculated strength parameter to enhance the visual quality of the image.

Potential Applications

This technology can be applied in various image and video encoding and decoding systems to improve the visual quality of the output by reducing artifacts at block boundaries.

Problems Solved

1. Artifacts at block boundaries in image and video encoding and decoding processes are reduced, leading to improved visual quality. 2. Enhances the overall compression efficiency of the encoding process by reducing the impact of artifacts on the final output.

Benefits

1. Improved visual quality of images and videos. 2. Enhanced compression efficiency in encoding processes. 3. Reduction of artifacts at block boundaries.

Potential Commercial Applications

Optimizing Image and Video Encoding for Enhanced Visual Quality

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art in this field is the use of deblocking filters in video coding standards such as H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC to reduce artifacts at block boundaries.

What are the specific parameters used to determine the strength of the boundary between transform blocks in the deblocking method described in the abstract?

The specific parameter used to determine the strength of the boundary between transform blocks is the value of a BS parameter, which is calculated based on the presence of non-zero transform coefficients in the transform blocks.

How does the deblocking filtering process improve the visual quality of images in the encoding and decoding processes?

The deblocking filtering process smooths out the block boundaries between transform blocks, reducing artifacts such as blockiness and banding in the image, resulting in a visually cleaner and more natural-looking output.

Original Abstract Submitted

A deblocking method, for deblocking a transform block boundary within a coding block in an image encoding and/or an image decoding is provided, wherein the coding block comprising transform blocks is coded in inter prediction mode and the transform blocks comprises a first transform block and a second transform block. The method comprises: determining, when the boundary between the first transform block and the second transform block is a transform block boundary and at least one of the first transform block and the second transform block has one or more non-zero transform coefficients, a value of a BS parameter for the boundary between the first transform block and the second transform block to be a first value; and performing de-blocking filtering process to the boundary between the first transform block and the second transform block at least based on the value of the boundary strength parameter.
