Controller for controlling a balancer circuit - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18523588 titled 'Controller for controlling a balancer circuit

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a controller for a power converter that can switch between different DC links based on the voltage values and harmonic frequencies. It also controls the mid-point current at a terminal of the power converter.

  • The controller determines the voltage difference between two DC links of a power converter.
  • It calculates the phase-angle and magnitude of the difference value for a harmonic frequency.
  • The controller provides a switching signal to switch between the DC links based on the phase-angle and magnitude.
  • It controls the mid-point current at a terminal of the power converter based on the switching signal.

Original Abstract Submitted

A controller controls a balancer circuit, and is configured to: determine a difference value between a first DC link voltage value across a first DC link of a power converter and a second DC link voltage value across a second DC link of the power converter; determine a phase-angle and a magnitude of the difference value for an integer harmonic of a predetermined grid frequency; and provide a switching signal for switching between the first DC link and the second DC link based on the phase-angle and the magnitude. The controller is also configured to control a mid-point current at a mid-point terminal of the power converter in terms of magnitude and direction based on the switching signal.
