METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PROCESSING IMAGE SIGNAL - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18519996 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PROCESSING IMAGE SIGNAL

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method and apparatus for processing a video signal, specifically focusing on decoding an image signal. The method involves determining a modified intra prediction mode based on the ratio between the width and height of a current block, selecting an inverse non-separable transform set based on the modified intra prediction mode, and applying an inverse non-separable transform matrix to the top-left region of the current block.

  • Ratio between width and height used to determine modified intra prediction mode
  • Selection of inverse non-separable transform set based on modified intra prediction mode
  • Application of inverse non-separable transform matrix to top-left region of current block

Potential Applications

This technology could be applied in video encoding and decoding systems, image processing software, and multimedia applications.

Problems Solved

This technology helps improve the efficiency and accuracy of decoding image signals, particularly for blocks with varying width and height.

Benefits

The method and apparatus described in the patent application can enhance the quality of decoded video signals, reduce artifacts, and optimize the processing of non-uniform blocks.

Potential Commercial Applications

The technology could be utilized in video streaming services, video conferencing platforms, surveillance systems, and digital media players.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be the use of traditional intra prediction modes and transform matrices in video processing algorithms.

What are the specific types of video signals that can benefit from this technology?

This technology can benefit video signals with non-uniform block sizes, where traditional decoding methods may not be as effective. By adapting the prediction mode and transform set based on the block dimensions, the decoding process can be optimized for various types of video signals.

How does this technology compare to existing methods in terms of computational efficiency?

This technology aims to improve the efficiency of decoding image signals by adapting the prediction mode and transform set based on the block dimensions. By optimizing these parameters, the decoding process can be more accurate and efficient compared to traditional methods that do not take block size variations into account.

Original Abstract Submitted

Embodiments of the present invention provide a method and apparatus for processing a video signal. A method for decoding an image signal according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises the steps of: for a current block having a width and a height different from each other, determining a modified intra prediction mode from an intra prediction mode, on the basis of a ratio between the width and the height of the current block and the intra prediction mode; determining an inverse non-separable transform set on the basis of the modified intra prediction mode; and applying an inverse non-separable transform matrix selected from the inverse non-separable transform set with respect to the top-left region of the current block, which is determined according to the width and the height of the current block.
