PROVIDING A CAPTIVE PORTAL TO MANAGE A DRIVER APPLICATION FOR A PERIPHERAL DEVICE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18514943 titled 'PROVIDING A CAPTIVE PORTAL TO MANAGE A DRIVER APPLICATION FOR A PERIPHERAL DEVICE

Simplified Explanation

The patent application abstract describes a mechanism for providing a captive portal to manage a driver application for a peripheral device over a wireless network.

  • Client device sends a request to connect to a peripheral device over a wireless network.
  • Receives permission to connect and then requests access to a web page.
  • Instead of the requested web page, a web page for the driver application is displayed.
  • The driver application can be launched using links for installation and launching.

Potential Applications

This technology could be applied in managing driver applications for various peripheral devices such as printers, scanners, or external hard drives.

Problems Solved

This technology streamlines the process of installing and launching driver applications for peripheral devices, making it more user-friendly and efficient.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include easier management of driver applications, improved user experience, and faster setup of peripheral devices.

Potential Commercial Applications

This technology could be valuable for companies that produce peripheral devices and want to provide a user-friendly installation process for their customers.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be existing systems that provide driver installation processes for peripheral devices, but this specific mechanism of using a captive portal for managing driver applications may be novel.

Unanswered Questions

How does this technology impact the security of the connection between the client device and the peripheral device over the wireless network?

The article does not provide details on how the security of the connection is ensured when using the captive portal for managing driver applications.

Are there any limitations to the types of peripheral devices that can be managed using this technology?

The article does not mention any limitations regarding the compatibility of this mechanism with different types of peripheral devices.

Original Abstract Submitted

Aspects of the disclosure provide for mechanisms providing a captive portal to manage a driver application for a peripheral device. Systems and methods of the disclosure include: providing, by a client device, a first request for a connection with a peripheral device over a wireless network provided by the peripheral device; receiving a message granting the connection to the wireless network; providing a second request to access a first web page at an address; receiving a second web page associated with a driver application for the peripheral device instead of the first web page; and launching the driver application by using a first link that facilitates an installation of the driver application and a second link that launches the driver application.
