IMAGE SENSOR COMPRISING ARRAY OF COLORED PIXELS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18489194 titled 'IMAGE SENSOR COMPRISING ARRAY OF COLORED PIXELS

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes an image sensor that uses a Bayer pattern-type pixel array. The pixel array consists of extended blocks, each containing four pixel blocks. The first and fourth pixels of the first and fourth pixel blocks sense green light, while the first and fourth pixels of the second and third pixel blocks sense red and blue light, respectively. The second and third pixels of all pixel blocks sense white light. A signal processing unit merges the color information from the first and fourth pixels with the illuminance information from the second and third pixels.

  • The image sensor uses a Bayer pattern-type pixel array with extended blocks.
  • Each extended block contains four pixel blocks.
  • The first and fourth pixels of the first and fourth pixel blocks sense green light.
  • The first and fourth pixels of the second and third pixel blocks sense red and blue light, respectively.
  • The second and third pixels of all pixel blocks sense white light.
  • A signal processing unit merges the color information from the first and fourth pixels with the illuminance information from the second and third pixels.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Digital cameras
