RESOURCE USAGE MONITORING, BILLING AND ENFORCEMENT FOR VIRTUAL PRIVATE LABEL CLOUDS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18468047 titled 'RESOURCE USAGE MONITORING, BILLING AND ENFORCEMENT FOR VIRTUAL PRIVATE LABEL CLOUDS

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes novel techniques for monitoring, billing, and enforcing resource usage in virtual private label clouds (vPLCs). Here are the key points:

  • Resource usage for vPLCs associated with resellers is monitored at both reseller and customer-of-reseller levels using resource IDs.
  • Usage information is stored in two levels and associated with a tenancy ID for the reseller and tenancy IDs for customers of the reseller.
  • A two-level billing process generates invoices using two-level pricing information and sends them to resellers or customers of resellers directly.
  • Usage enforcement can be performed per vPLC or per customer tenancy of a reseller's customer.

Potential Applications

The technology described in the patent application could be applied in various industries where resource monitoring, billing, and enforcement are crucial, such as cloud computing, software as a service (SaaS), and managed services.

Problems Solved

1. Efficient monitoring and billing of resource usage in vPLCs. 2. Streamlined enforcement of resource usage policies at different levels of tenancy.

Benefits

1. Improved accuracy in tracking resource usage. 2. Simplified billing processes for resellers and customers. 3. Enhanced control over resource allocation and consumption.

Potential Commercial Applications

Optimizing resource management in cloud computing services Enhancing billing systems for SaaS providers Improving compliance with resource usage policies in managed services

Possible Prior Art

Prior art in resource monitoring and billing systems for cloud computing environments may include technologies that track usage at a single level of tenancy, rather than the two-level approach described in this patent application.

Unanswered Questions

1. How does the technology handle scalability issues in monitoring resource usage for a large number of vPLCs? 2. What security measures are in place to protect the usage information stored at different levels of tenancy?

Original Abstract Submitted

Novel techniques for resource usage monitoring, billing, and enforcement for virtual private label clouds (vPLCs) are disclosed. In some embodiments, resource usage for a vPLC associated with a reseller is monitored at both reseller level and customer-of-reseller level using resource IDs, and stored as usage information in two levels and associated with a tenancy ID for the reseller (at the reseller level) and tenancy IDs for customers of the reseller (at the customer-of-reseller level). In some embodiments, a two-level billing process generates invoices using two-level pricing information and the generated invoices to either resellers or customers of resellers directly. In some embodiments, usage enforcement can be performed per vPLC or per customer tenancy of a reseller's customer.
