GAS DIFFUSION LAYER FOR FUEL CELL, METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME, AND UNIT CELL FOR FUEL CELL INCLUDING THE SAME - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18461356 titled 'GAS DIFFUSION LAYER FOR FUEL CELL, METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME, AND UNIT CELL FOR FUEL CELL INCLUDING THE SAME

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a gas diffusion layer for a fuel cell, which consists of a base layer with short carbon fibers and a reinforcing portion with continuous carbon fibers. A micro porous layer is formed on the first surface of the base layer.

  • The gas diffusion layer is designed for use in a fuel cell unit cell.
  • The base layer of the gas diffusion layer contains short carbon fibers.
  • A reinforcing portion is formed in a specific area of the base layer, with continuous carbon fibers oriented in this portion.
  • The reinforcing portion is located adjacent to the first surface of the base layer.
  • A micro porous layer is applied to the first surface of the base layer.

Potential Applications

  • Fuel cell technology
  • Renewable energy systems
  • Electric vehicles
  • Portable power sources

Problems Solved

  • Enhances the structural integrity and durability of the gas diffusion layer.
  • Improves the performance and efficiency of fuel cells.
  • Provides better gas diffusion and distribution within the fuel cell.

Benefits

  • Increased strength and stability due to the reinforcing portion with continuous carbon fibers.
  • Improved gas diffusion and distribution through the micro porous layer.
  • Enhanced overall performance and efficiency of fuel cells.
  • Extended lifespan and durability of the gas diffusion layer.

Original Abstract Submitted

One embodiment provides a gas diffusion layer for a fuel cell constituting a unit cell of the fuel cell. The gas diffusion layer includes a base layer that includes short carbon fibers and has a reinforcing portion formed in a predetermined area thereof in a thickness direction with continuous carbon fibers oriented in the reinforcing portion. The reinforcing portion is formed adjacent to a first surface of the base layer. A micro porous layer is formed on the first surface of the base layer.
