ESTIMATING INTRINSIC RESISTANCE OF A COIN CELL BATTERY - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18446348 titled 'ESTIMATING INTRINSIC RESISTANCE OF A COIN CELL BATTERY

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes techniques and apparatus for determining the intrinsic resistance and/or battery life of a coin cell battery based on the recovery time of the battery voltage after a significant current draw event. Once this information is known, a device powered by the coin cell battery can take action to lengthen the battery's useful lifetime.

  • The patent application involves determining the intrinsic resistance and/or battery life of a coin cell battery by analyzing the recovery time of the battery voltage after a significant current draw event.
  • By performing operations with varying current draws and analyzing the recovery time of the battery voltage, the position of the battery in its lifetime can be estimated.
  • This information can be used by devices powered by coin cell batteries to optimize their operations and extend the battery's lifespan.
      1. Potential Applications
  • Consumer electronics powered by coin cell batteries, such as watches, calculators, and remote controls, could benefit from this technology to improve battery life.
  • Medical devices, sensors, and other IoT devices that rely on coin cell batteries could also use this technology to optimize power usage and extend battery lifespan.
      1. Problems Solved
  • Determining the intrinsic resistance and battery life of coin cell batteries can help prevent unexpected power failures in devices.
  • Optimizing the usage of coin cell batteries based on their recovery time can lead to cost savings and reduced environmental impact from battery disposal.
      1. Benefits
  • Extended battery life for devices powered by coin cell batteries.
  • Improved reliability and performance of devices by optimizing power usage.
  • Cost savings from reduced battery replacements and disposal.

Original Abstract Submitted

Techniques and apparatus for determining intrinsic resistance and/or battery life of a coin cell battery based on the recovery time of the battery voltage after a significant current draw event. Once the intrinsic resistance and/or battery life is known, a device powered by the coin cell battery can take action to lengthen the battery's useful lifetime. One example technique of operating a device powered by a battery generally includes performing an operation with a relatively high current draw from the battery compared to other operations of the device, determining a recovery time of a voltage of the battery after the operation, and estimating a position of the battery in a lifetime of the battery based on the recovery time.
