ELECTRONIC DEVICE AND CONTROL METHOD THEREFOR - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18372840 titled 'ELECTRONIC DEVICE AND CONTROL METHOD THEREFOR

Simplified Explanation

An electronic device is disclosed that includes a backlight unit, a driving unit, and a processor. The backlight unit consists of multiple backlights, the driving unit is responsible for driving the backlight unit, and the processor is used to identify the number of time intervals in which each backlight should be turned on based on luminance information. The processor controls the driving unit to turn on the backlights during the identified time intervals by adjusting the timing of when each backlight is turned on.

  • The electronic device has a backlight unit with multiple backlights.
  • A driving unit is present to drive the backlight unit.
  • A processor is used to analyze luminance information about each backlight.
  • The processor identifies the number of time intervals in which each backlight should be turned on.
  • The driving unit is controlled by the processor to turn on the backlights during the identified time intervals.
  • The timing of when each backlight is turned on can be adjusted.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • This technology can be used in electronic devices with displays that require backlighting, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and televisions.
  • It can improve energy efficiency by selectively turning on backlights only when needed, reducing power consumption.
  • The technology can enhance the visual experience by dynamically adjusting the backlighting based on the luminance information.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Traditional backlighting methods may result in unnecessary power consumption as all backlights are turned on continuously.
  • Inefficient backlighting can lead to reduced battery life in portable devices.
  • Uniform backlighting may not provide optimal visual quality in different lighting conditions.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved energy efficiency by selectively turning on backlights based on luminance information.
  • Extended battery life in portable devices due to reduced power consumption.
  • Enhanced visual experience with dynamically adjusted backlighting for optimal viewing in different lighting conditions.

Original Abstract Submitted

An electronic device is disclosed. The electronic device includes a backlight unit including a plurality of backlights; a driving unit for driving the backlight unit; and a processor for identifying, based on luminance information about each of the plurality of backlights, a number of time intervals in which each of the plurality of backlights is to be turned on from among a plurality of time intervals included in a backlight dimming interval, and controlling the driving unit so that the plurality of backlights are turned on during the identified number of time intervals by variously changing times at which the plurality of backlights are turned on.
