VEHICLE CONTROL DEVICE, VEHICLE CONTROL METHOD, AND STORAGE MEDIUM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18369305 titled 'VEHICLE CONTROL DEVICE, VEHICLE CONTROL METHOD, AND STORAGE MEDIUM

Simplified Explanation

The vehicle control device described in the patent application is designed to recognize the surrounding situation of a vehicle, including markings on the road and the position of preceding vehicles. It can determine if there is interference between a specific region set based on lane markings and the position of a preceding vehicle. If interference is detected, the device will change the driving mode accordingly. The width of the specific region can be adjusted based on factors such as inter-vehicle distance and road curvature.

  • Explanation of the patent/innovation:

- First recognizer recognizes surrounding situation of vehicle - Second recognizer identifies lane markings from map information - Driving controller and mode decider determine driving mode - Interference detection between specific region and preceding vehicle - Driving mode adjustment based on interference - Variable width setting for specific region based on distance and road curvature

Potential Applications

The technology can be applied in autonomous vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems, and traffic management systems.

Problems Solved

This technology helps in improving road safety by adjusting driving modes based on the presence of preceding vehicles and road conditions.

Benefits

- Enhanced safety on the road - Improved efficiency in driving - Adaptability to different road conditions

Potential Commercial Applications

The technology can be utilized in self-driving cars, fleet management systems, and smart city infrastructure.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be the use of lane departure warning systems in vehicles, which alert drivers when they unintentionally drift out of their lane.

Unanswered Questions

How does the device handle sudden changes in the surrounding situation?

The patent application does not specify how the device reacts to abrupt changes in the environment, such as a vehicle cutting into the lane unexpectedly.

What are the limitations of the technology in adverse weather conditions?

The document does not address how the device performs in situations with poor visibility or slippery road conditions.

Original Abstract Submitted

A vehicle control device includes a first recognizer configured to recognize a surrounding situation of a vehicle including a first marking, a second recognizer configured to recognize a second marking relating to a lane near the vehicle from map information, a driving controller, and a mode decider. It is determined whether or not there is interference between a specific region set on the basis of the second marking and a position of the preceding vehicle when the first marking is not recognized and the preceding vehicle is recognized. A driving mode is changed from the first driving mode to the second driving mode when it is determined that the preceding vehicle interferes with the specific region. A width of the specific region is variably set in accordance with at least one of an inter-vehicle distance between the vehicle and the preceding vehicle and a road's curvature where the vehicle travels.
