METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR WIRELESS COMMUNICATION USING SATELLITE ACCESS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18366984 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR WIRELESS COMMUNICATION USING SATELLITE ACCESS

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method for a user equipment (UE) in a wireless communication system to initiate a NAS (Non-Access Stratum) procedure before the start of a discontinuous communication (DC) period. The UE verifies if the communication process between the UE and the network via a satellite can be completed before the start of an unavailability period of the satellite. If there is enough time, the UE initiates the communication process, which may include an NAS procedure. The UE can only trigger the NAS procedure when there is enough time for it to be completed before the start of the unavailability period and loss of satellite coverage. The NAS procedure can be any registration, update, request, attach, tracking area update, service request, mobility management, session management, signaling, or similar message used in EPS (or in S1 mode).

  • The patent application describes a method for a UE to initiate an NAS procedure before the start of a DC period in a wireless communication system using satellite access.
  • The UE verifies if the communication process with the network via the satellite can be completed before the start of the satellite's unavailability period.
  • If there is enough time, the UE initiates the communication process by transmitting a request message to a network entity.
  • The communication process may include an NAS procedure, such as registration, update, request, attach, tracking area update, service request, mobility management, session management, signaling, or similar message used in EPS (or in S1 mode).
  • The UE can only trigger the NAS procedure when there is enough time for it to be completed before the start of the unavailability period and loss of satellite coverage.
  • The NAS procedure can be triggered during a time range that allows it to be completed before the start of the unavailability period and loss of satellite coverage.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Improved efficiency and reliability of communication in 5G or 6G communication systems using satellite access.
  • Enhanced performance of NAS procedures in wireless communication systems.
  • Facilitating seamless handover and connectivity in satellite-based communication networks.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Ensuring that NAS procedures can be completed before the start of an unavailability period of the satellite and loss of satellite coverage.
  • Optimizing the timing of NAS procedures to avoid interruptions in communication.
  • Improving the overall user experience and network performance in satellite-based communication systems.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Enhanced reliability and efficiency of communication processes in wireless communication systems using satellite access.
  • Seamless connectivity and handover between satellite and terrestrial networks.
  • Improved user experience with reduced interruptions and delays in communication.
  • Optimization of network resources and improved network performance.

Original Abstract Submitted

The disclosure relates to a 5G or 6G communication system for supporting a higher data transmission rate. A method performed by a UE in a wireless communication system using satellite access is provided. The method includes identifying whether an NAS procedure is completable before a start of a DC; and in case that the NAS procedure is completable before the start of the DC, initiating the NAS procedure by transmitting a request message to a network entity. And a method for a UE in a communications network using a satellite to access the network comprises verifying if a communication process between the UE and the network via the satellite can be completed before a start of an unavailability period of the satellite or cannot be completed before a start of an unavailability period of the satellite. The UE may only initiate the communication process when it verifies that there is enough time for the communication process to be completed the start of the unavailability period of the satellite. The communication process between the UE and the satellite may comprise an NAS procedure. The UE may only trigger the NAS procedure when it verifies that there is enough time for the procedure to be completed before the start of the unavailability period of the satellite and loss of satellite coverage for the UE. The UE may trigger the NAS procedure during a time range for which the procedure can be completed before the start of the unavailability period of the satellite and loss of satellite coverage for the UE. The NAS procedure may be any of a registration procedure, a mobility registration update procedure, an NAS request procedure, an attach procedure, a tracking area update procedure, a service request procedure, an NAS mobility management procedure, an NAS session management procedure, NAS signaling, an NAS message, any similar message that is used in EPS (or in S1 mode).
