IMAGE ENCODING METHOD AND APPARATUS, AND IMAGE DECODING METHOD AND APPARATUS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18354161 titled 'IMAGE ENCODING METHOD AND APPARATUS, AND IMAGE DECODING METHOD AND APPARATUS

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method for decoding motion information that includes both spatial information and time information. The spatial information indicates the direction of spatial prediction candidates used for sub-units within a current prediction unit. The time information indicates a reference prediction unit from a previous picture that is used for predicting the current prediction unit. The patent also mentions the possibility of an encoding or decoding apparatus that can perform this method.

  • The method involves decoding motion information using spatial and time information.
  • Spatial information indicates the direction of spatial prediction candidates for sub-units within a current prediction unit.
  • Time information indicates the reference prediction unit from a previous picture used for predicting the current prediction unit.
  • The patent application suggests the possibility of an encoding or decoding apparatus that can implement this method.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Video compression and encoding: This method can be used in video compression algorithms to improve the efficiency of encoding and decoding motion information.
  • Video streaming: By efficiently decoding motion information, this technology can enhance the quality and speed of video streaming services.
  • Video editing and post-production: The method can be utilized in video editing software to accurately predict motion and enhance the editing process.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Improved video compression: By accurately determining motion-related information, this method can lead to more efficient video compression, reducing file sizes without significant loss of quality.
  • Enhanced video playback: The decoding of motion information using spatial and time data can improve the smoothness and accuracy of video playback, reducing artifacts and motion blur.
  • Efficient video editing: By providing accurate motion prediction, this technology can streamline the video editing process, allowing for more precise cuts and transitions.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Higher video compression efficiency: By incorporating spatial and time information, this method can achieve better compression ratios, resulting in smaller file sizes and reduced bandwidth requirements.
  • Improved video quality: Accurate motion prediction leads to better video quality, reducing artifacts and enhancing the overall viewing experience.
  • Faster video processing: The decoding method described in the patent application can enable faster video processing, allowing for real-time applications and quicker editing workflows.

Original Abstract Submitted

Provided is a method of decoding motion information characterized in that information for determining motion-related information includes spatial information and time information, wherein the spatial information indicates a direction of spatial prediction candidates used for sub-units from among spatial prediction candidates located on a left side and an upper side of a current prediction unit, and the time information indicates a reference prediction unit of a previous picture used for prediction of the current prediction unit. Further, an encoding apparatus or a decoding apparatus capable of performing the above described encoding or decoding method may be provided.
