FLEXIBLE RESTRICTED TARGET WAKE TIME OPERATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18339916 titled 'FLEXIBLE RESTRICTED TARGET WAKE TIME OPERATION

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes methods and devices for enabling Target Wake Time (TWT) operation in a wireless local area network (WLAN). TWT allows devices to schedule their wake-up times, reducing power consumption and improving network efficiency.

  • The invention involves a non-access point (AP) multi-link device (MLD) with multiple stations (STAs) that can form links with APs.
  • One of the transceivers in the MLD is designed to transmit or receive a TWT Information frame to or from the AP MLD over a specific link.
  • This TWT Information frame includes instructions to suspend or resume TWT service periods (SPs) on another link.
  • The MLD's processor, connected to the transceivers, is responsible for suspending or resuming TWT SPs on the second link based on the successful transmission or reception of the TWT Information frame.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be applied in various WLAN environments, including homes, offices, and public spaces.
  • It can be used in IoT devices, smartphones, laptops, and other devices that connect to a WLAN.
  • The innovation can improve power efficiency and network performance in dense WLAN deployments.

Problems Solved

  • Traditional WLAN devices often consume unnecessary power by staying awake even when there is no data to transmit or receive.
  • Coordinating TWT operation between devices in a WLAN can be challenging, leading to inefficient power usage and network congestion.
  • This technology solves these problems by providing a mechanism for devices to suspend or resume TWT service periods based on instructions received from the AP MLD.

Benefits

  • By implementing TWT operation, devices can schedule their wake-up times, reducing power consumption and extending battery life.
  • The technology improves network efficiency by reducing contention and congestion in WLAN environments.
  • It simplifies the coordination of TWT operation between devices, enhancing the overall performance of the WLAN.

Original Abstract Submitted

Methods and apparatuses for facilitating TWT operation between devices in a wireless local area network. A non-access point (AP) multi-link device (MLD) comprises a processor and stations (STAs), each comprising a transceiver configured to form links with APs affiliated with an AP MLD. A first of the transceivers is further configured to transmit to or receive from the AP MLD over a first of the links a multi-link operation (MLO)-supporting target wake time (TWT) Information frame that includes an indication to suspend or resume TWT service periods (SPs) on a second of the links. The processor is operably coupled to the transceivers and configured to, based on the TWT Information frame being transmitted or received successfully over the first link, suspend or resume the TWT SPs on the second link.
