SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR SIDELINK TRANSMISSION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18331902 titled 'SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR SIDELINK TRANSMISSION

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes systems and methods for sidelink transmission. Sidelink transmission refers to direct communication between User Equipment (UE) devices without the need for a base station.

  • The method involves the UE determining a measure of channel congestion, which can be a channel busy ratio or a channel occupancy ratio. This measure helps the UE understand the level of congestion in the communication channel.
  • Based on the measure of channel congestion, the UE determines a contention window size. The contention window size determines the interval of time the UE should wait before attempting a sidelink transmission.
  • During the first interval of time, the UE waits without making a sidelink transmission. The length of this interval is determined by the contention window size.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • This technology can be used in wireless communication systems where direct device-to-device communication is required, such as in Internet of Things (IoT) networks or emergency communication systems.
  • It can also be applied in scenarios where a base station is not available or cannot handle the communication load efficiently, such as in remote areas or during network congestion.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • The technology addresses the issue of channel congestion in sidelink communication. By measuring the channel congestion and adjusting the contention window size, the UE can avoid interference and collisions with other devices, leading to more reliable and efficient communication.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved reliability: By considering channel congestion, the technology helps avoid collisions and interference, leading to more reliable communication between UEs.
  • Efficient use of resources: The determination of contention window size based on channel congestion allows for optimal utilization of the communication channel, reducing unnecessary delays and improving overall system efficiency.
  • Flexibility and adaptability: The method allows UEs to dynamically adjust their transmission behavior based on the current channel conditions, ensuring optimal performance in varying environments.

Original Abstract Submitted

Systems and methods for sidelink transmission. In some embodiments, a method includes: determining, by a User Equipment (UE), a measure of channel congestion, the measure of channel congestion being a channel busy ratio or a channel occupancy ratio; determining, by the UE, a determined contention window size, based on the measure of channel congestion; and waiting, during a first interval of time, without making a sidelink transmission, wherein a length of the first interval of time is based on the determined contention window size.
