FLUORINE-FREE DYNAMIC WATER REPELLENTS WITH OIL-REPELLENT PROPERTIES, WATER-REPELLENT ARTICLES, AND METHODS OF MAKING THE SAME - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18280292 titled 'FLUORINE-FREE DYNAMIC WATER REPELLENTS WITH OIL-REPELLENT PROPERTIES, WATER-REPELLENT ARTICLES, AND METHODS OF MAKING THE SAME

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a copolymer prepared by copolymerizing monomer components including polydimethylsiloxane mono(meth)acrylate, carboxylic acid-functional mono(meth)acrylate, hydroxyalkyl mono(meth)acrylate, and linear alkyl mono(meth)acrylate.

  • The copolymer is useful as a water- and oil-repellent treatment on a substrate.
  • The copolymer can be used to provide water- and oil-repellent properties to various materials.
  • The copolymer can be applied to substrates to enhance their resistance to water and oil.
  • The copolymer can be used in industries such as textiles, coatings, and packaging.
      1. Potential Applications

The copolymer can be used in various industries such as textiles, coatings, and packaging to provide water- and oil-repellent properties to substrates.

      1. Problems Solved

The copolymer helps in solving the problem of making substrates resistant to water and oil, thereby increasing their durability and longevity.

      1. Benefits

The copolymer provides water- and oil-repellent properties to substrates, enhancing their performance and lifespan.

      1. Potential Commercial Applications of this Technology

The copolymer can be commercialized for use in textile manufacturing, coating applications, and packaging industries to improve the water- and oil-repellent properties of products.

      1. Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be the use of traditional water- and oil-repellent treatments for substrates, which may not offer the same level of performance and durability as the copolymer described in the patent application.

        1. Unanswered Questions
        2. How does the copolymer compare to existing water- and oil-repellent treatments in terms of effectiveness and longevity?

The article does not provide a direct comparison between the copolymer and existing treatments in terms of effectiveness and longevity. Further research or testing may be needed to determine the superiority of the copolymer.

        1. Are there any environmental or health concerns associated with the use of the copolymer in commercial applications?

The article does not address any potential environmental or health concerns related to the copolymer. Additional studies or assessments may be required to evaluate the impact of the copolymer on the environment and human health.

Original Abstract Submitted

A copolymer preparable by copolymerization of monomer components comprising: a) polydimethylsiloxane mono(meth)acrylate having a molecular weight of from 300 to 10000 grams/mole; b) optionally C-Ccarboxylic acid-functional mono(meth)acrylate or a salt thereof; c) at least one C-Chydroxyalkyl mono(meth)acrylate; and d) at least one of: i) C-Clinear alkyl mono(meth)acrylate optionally having one or two carbon atoms replaced by O or S; or ii) at least one (meth)acrylate represented by the formula wherein: Ris H or a C-Calkyl group; n is an integer from 0 to 18, inclusive; each X is O, S, C-Coxyalkylenoxy, C-Cthioalkylenethio, or a covalent bond; and Ris independently a C-Chydrocarbyl group. The copolymer is useful as a water- and oil-repellent treatment on a substrate. Certain monomers corresponding to component ii) are also disclosed.
