METHOD AND DEVICE FOR TERMINAL TO JOIN MULTICAST SERVICE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18259013 titled 'METHOD AND DEVICE FOR TERMINAL TO JOIN MULTICAST SERVICE

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method and device for a terminal to join a multicast service. Here is a simplified explanation of the abstract:

  • The method involves a session management function (SMF) receiving a join request message from a terminal to join a multicast service.
  • The SMF then transmits a discovery request message to an NF repository function (NRF), which includes a multicast/broadcast service (MBS) session ID related to the multicast service.
  • The SMF receives a discovery response message from the NRF, which includes an MB-SMF ID mapped to the MBS session ID.
  • The SMF acquires information about the MBS session from an MB-SMF identified by the MB-SMF ID.
  • The SMF notifies a radio access network (RAN) connected to the terminal about the information related to the MBS session based on the acquired information.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Multicast services: This method and device can be used to enable terminals to join multicast services, allowing for efficient distribution of content to multiple users simultaneously. This can be useful in applications such as live streaming, video conferencing, and content delivery networks.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Efficient joining of multicast services: The method and device described in the patent application provide a streamlined process for terminals to join multicast services. This eliminates the need for complex manual configuration and ensures efficient utilization of network resources.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved user experience: By enabling terminals to easily join multicast services, users can access content in real-time without delays or interruptions. This enhances the overall user experience, particularly for applications that require simultaneous content delivery to multiple users.
  • Efficient network utilization: The method and device optimize network resources by automating the process of joining multicast services. This reduces network congestion and improves the scalability of multicast services.
  • Simplified implementation: The described method and device provide a standardized approach for terminals to join multicast services, making it easier for service providers to deploy and manage such services.

Original Abstract Submitted

Disclosed are a method and device for a terminal to join a multicast service. A method performed by a session management function (SMF) may comprise the operations of: receiving a join request message for a terminal to join a multicast service; transmitting, to an NF repository function (NRF), a discovery request message including a multicast/broadcast service (MBS) session ID related to the multicast service; receiving a discovery response message from the NRF in response to the discovery request message, the discovery response message including an MB-SMF ID mapped to the MBS session ID; acquiring, from an MB-SMF identified by the MB-SMF ID, information about an MBS session indicated by the MBS session ID; and notifying a radio access network (RAN), to which the terminal connects, of information related to the MBS session, on the basis of the acquired information.
