TECHNIQUES FOR COMMUNICATING USING A RECONFIGURABLE SURFACE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18258787 titled 'TECHNIQUES FOR COMMUNICATING USING A RECONFIGURABLE SURFACE

Simplified Explanation

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described in this patent application. The invention involves a user equipment (UE) receiving a set of reference signals from a base station via a reconfigurable surface. These reference signals are reflected by the reconfigurable surface using a set of precoder configurations.

  • The set of reference signals is transmitted within a set of reference signal occasions of a sweep procedure associated with configuring the reconfigurable surface with different precoder configurations.
  • The UE can transmit a feedback message to the base station via the reconfigurable surface, which includes an indication of at least one precoder configuration based on receiving the set of reference signals.
  • The UE then receives a downlink transmission from the base station via the reconfigurable surface, which is based on transmitting the feedback message.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Improved wireless communication: The use of reconfigurable surfaces and precoder configurations can enhance the quality and reliability of wireless communications between base stations and user equipment.
  • Increased coverage and capacity: By optimizing the reflection of signals using different precoder configurations, the reconfigurable surface can help extend the coverage area and increase the capacity of wireless networks.
  • Flexible deployment: The ability to configure the reconfigurable surface with different precoder configurations allows for flexible deployment of wireless communication systems in various environments.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Signal reflection optimization: The invention addresses the problem of optimizing the reflection of signals by using different precoder configurations, which can improve the overall performance of wireless communication systems.
  • Interference reduction: By using reconfigurable surfaces, the invention can help mitigate interference issues in wireless networks, leading to better signal quality and reduced interference for users.
  • Adaptability to changing conditions: The ability to reconfigure the surface and adjust precoder configurations allows for better adaptation to changing environmental conditions, such as varying signal strengths or interference levels.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved signal quality: The use of reconfigurable surfaces and precoder configurations can enhance the signal quality and reliability of wireless communications, leading to better user experiences.
  • Increased network capacity: By optimizing signal reflection, the technology can help increase the capacity of wireless networks, allowing for more users and devices to connect simultaneously.
  • Flexibility and adaptability: The ability to reconfigure the surface and adjust precoder configurations provides flexibility and adaptability to changing network conditions, ensuring optimal performance in different environments.

Original Abstract Submitted

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may receive, from a base station via a reconfigurable surface, a set of reference signals reflected by the reconfigurable surface using a set of precoder configurations. In some aspects, the set of reference signals are transmitted within a set of reference signal occasions of a sweep procedure associated with configuring the reconfigurable surface with different precoder configurations of the set of precoder configurations for reflecting signals. The UE may additionally transmit, to the base station via the reconfigurable surface, a feedback message including an indication of at least one precoder configuration of the set of precoder configurations based on receiving the set of reference signals. The UE may then receive, from the base station via the reconfigurable surface, a downlink transmission based on transmitting the feedback message.
