Satellite Search Method and Apparatus - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18250425 titled 'Satellite Search Method and Apparatus

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a satellite search method for mobile terminals. Here is a simplified explanation of the abstract:

  • The method determines the location information of an available satellite based on the location information of the mobile terminal and three-dimensional (3D) map information.
  • It then checks if there is a direct line of sight between the mobile terminal and the satellite, and if it is blocked by an obstacle.
  • If the line of sight is blocked, the method determines the location information of a target area based on the 3D map information.
  • The target area includes a direct line of sight between the mobile terminal and the satellite.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Navigation systems in vehicles or mobile devices can use this method to accurately determine the location of satellites and ensure a clear line of sight for better satellite signal reception.
  • Emergency services can utilize this method to quickly locate satellites and establish communication in areas with obstructed line of sight.
  • Remote sensing applications, such as environmental monitoring or disaster response, can benefit from accurate satellite positioning even in challenging terrain.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • The method addresses the issue of obstructed line of sight between mobile terminals and satellites, which can result in poor satellite signal reception and inaccurate location determination.
  • It solves the problem of relying solely on location information of the mobile terminal, by incorporating 3D map information to determine the location of available satellites.
  • The method provides an alternative solution when the direct line of sight is blocked, by determining the location information of a target area based on the 3D map information.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved accuracy and reliability of satellite positioning systems, leading to better navigation and location-based services.
  • Enhanced communication capabilities in areas with obstructed line of sight, ensuring reliable connectivity for emergency services or remote sensing applications.
  • Increased efficiency and effectiveness of satellite-based operations in challenging terrain or environments with obstacles.

Original Abstract Submitted

A satellite search method is applied to a mobile terminal. The satellite search method includes determining, based on location information of the mobile terminal, location information of an available satellite, and three-dimensional (3D) map information, whether a direct line of sight between the mobile terminal and the available satellite is blocked by an obstacle, and determining location information of a target area based on the 3D map information when the direct line of sight is blocked by the obstacle, where the target area includes a direct line of sight between the mobile terminal and the available satellite.
