DISPLAY SYSTEM AND DISPLAY DEVICE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18243852 titled 'DISPLAY SYSTEM AND DISPLAY DEVICE

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a display device that can switch between showing a rearward image and displaying other information. The device includes a housing, a variable reflectance element, a display, a control circuit, and an actuator.

  • The display device can switch between two postures: in the first posture, it displays a portion of a rearward image, and in the second posture, it displays the entire rearward image.
  • The variable reflectance element can change the reflectivity of incident light based on the illuminance (brightness) detected by sensors.
  • The first illuminance indicates the brightness around the vehicle and is detected by a sensor.
  • The second illuminance indicates the intensity of light emitted on the front surface of the display device and is detected by another sensor.
  • When the display device is in the first posture and displaying the rearward image, it is visible to the driver through the variable reflectance element.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Automotive industry: This display device can be used in vehicles to provide the driver with a clear view of the rearward image while also displaying other relevant information.
  • Navigation systems: The display device can be integrated into navigation systems to show the rearward image and navigation instructions simultaneously.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Limited visibility: The display device solves the problem of limited visibility by allowing the driver to see the rearward image even when other information is being displayed.
  • Safety concerns: By providing a clear view of the rearward image, the display device enhances safety by helping the driver be aware of their surroundings.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved driver visibility: The display device ensures that the driver can see the rearward image clearly, even in situations where other information needs to be displayed.
  • Enhanced safety: By providing a clear view of the rearward image, the display device helps the driver make informed decisions and avoid potential hazards.

Original Abstract Submitted

A display device includes a housing, a variable reflectance element, a display to display at least a portion of a rearward image, a display device control circuit, and an actuator to switch the variable reflectance element between first and second postures. In the first posture, the display displays the portion of the rearward image. In the second posture, the display displays the rearward image. In the second posture, the reflectivity of the incident light varies between first and second values of a first and a second illuminance, respectively. The first illuminance indicates brightness around a vehicle and is detected by a sensor. The second illuminance indicates intensity of light emitted on a front surface of the display device and is detected by another sensor. When the display displays at least the portion of the rearward image, the display is visible to a driver through the variable reflectance element.
