NOTIFICATION DEVICE AND NOTIFICATION METHOD - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18221243 titled 'NOTIFICATION DEVICE AND NOTIFICATION METHOD

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a notification device that detects specific actions of a driver in a vehicle controlled by an autonomous driving system, based on the driver's image, and outputs a confidence rate for the detection. It then specifies a message to inhibit a potentially dangerous control-ending action that may follow the detected action, and notifies the driver if the effectiveness level is above a certain threshold.

  • The device detects predetermined actions of the driver from their face region in an image.
  • It calculates a confidence rate to indicate the certainty of the detection.
  • A message is specified to prevent a control-ending action that could occur after the detected action.
  • The driver is notified of the message if the effectiveness level is high enough, based on the confidence rate and probabilities of the control-ending action being inhibited or performed.
      1. Potential Applications
  • Enhancing safety in autonomous vehicles by preventing potentially dangerous driver actions.
  • Improving driver assistance systems by providing real-time feedback to the driver.
      1. Problems Solved
  • Minimizing the risk of accidents caused by driver actions in autonomous vehicles.
  • Enhancing communication between the autonomous driving system and the driver.
      1. Benefits
  • Increased safety for both the driver and other road users.
  • Better control and management of driver behavior in autonomous vehicles.

Original Abstract Submitted

A notification device detecting a predetermined action of a driver of a vehicle in which travel is controlled by an autonomous driving system from a driver image including a face region representing a face of the driver and outputting a confidence rate indicating a certainty in the detection, specifying a message for inhibiting a control ending action which possibly follows the detected action and corresponds to an ending condition of control by the autonomous driving system, and notifying the driver of the specified message through an output device when an effectiveness level is higher than a predetermined notification threshold, the effectiveness level calculated by multiplying the confidence rate by a first probability of the control ending action being inhibited when notifying the driver of the specified message or by a second probability of the control ending action being performed when not notifying the driver of the specified message.
