Method and Apparatus for Receiver Assisted Transmission in Shared Spectrum - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18164498 titled 'Method and Apparatus for Receiver Assisted Transmission in Shared Spectrum

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method for determining the availability of a communication channel in a shared spectrum for a user equipment (UE) in a wireless network. Here are the key points:

  • An access node, such as a gNB (gNodeB), detects a clear communication channel in a shared spectrum.
  • The access node sends downlink control information (DCI) to a UE, instructing it to measure a specific resource on the communication channel.
  • The UE, triggered by the DCI, measures the received energy on the specified resource.
  • The UE generates a measurement report based on the measured energy and sends it back to the access node.
  • The access node analyzes the measurement report to determine whether to transmit data to the UE on the communication channel.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Wireless communication networks that operate in shared spectrum bands.
  • 5G and future generations of cellular networks.
  • Internet of Things (IoT) devices that rely on wireless connectivity.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Efficient utilization of shared spectrum resources.
  • Avoiding interference and collisions between multiple UEs accessing the same communication channel.
  • Enabling dynamic allocation of communication channels based on real-time measurements.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved network capacity and performance.
  • Enhanced reliability and quality of wireless communication.
  • Optimal utilization of available spectrum resources.
  • Reduced interference and improved overall network efficiency.

Original Abstract Submitted

An access node such as a gNB, when determining that a communication channel in a shared spectrum is clear, may send downlink control information (DCI) triggering a user equipment (UE) to measure a resource to determine whether the communication channel is available for the UE. The UE, triggered by the DCI, may measure received energy on resource, generate a measurement report and send the measurement report to the access node. The access node may determine whether to transmit data to the UE in the communication channel based on the measurement report.
