Methods and Apparatus for User Equipment-Anticipated Common Beam Switching - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18164083 titled 'Methods and Apparatus for User Equipment-Anticipated Common Beam Switching

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for user equipment (UE) to anticipate common beam switching in a wireless network. Here are the key points:

  • The UE receives a set of reference signals from a network controller.
  • It sends a measurement report to the network controller based on one of the received reference signals.
  • If the quantity of the first reference signal reported in the measurement report exceeds a threshold, the UE determines that a beam switch may be needed.
  • Based on this determination, the UE monitors a specific channel (PDCCH) over a search space on a first control resource set (CORESET).
  • The UE sets a spatial quasi-colocation (QCL) field in a transmission configuration indication (TCI) state of the first CORESET to the resource index of the first reference signal.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Wireless communication networks
  • Mobile devices and smartphones
  • Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • 5G and future generations of wireless networks

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Efficient beam switching in wireless networks
  • Anticipating the need for beam switching based on reference signal measurements
  • Optimizing the monitoring of control channels for improved network performance

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved network efficiency and performance
  • Reduced latency in beam switching
  • Enhanced user experience in wireless communication
  • Better utilization of network resources

Original Abstract Submitted

A method for user equipment-anticipated common beam switching includes receiving, by a user equipment (UE), a set of reference signals from a network controller; sending, by the UE, a measurement report to the network controller based on a first reference signal of the received reference signals; determining, by the UE, that a quantity of the first reference signal reported in the measurement report exceeds a threshold; and based thereon monitoring, by the UE, a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) over a search space on a first control resource set (CORESET),a spatial quasi-colocation (QCL) field in a transmission configuration indication (TCI) state of the first CORESET being set to a resource index of the first reference signal.
