ELECTRONIC DEVICE FOR CONTROLLING INPUT MODE ACCORDING TO FOLDING ANGLE, AND METHOD THEREFOR - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18163943 titled 'ELECTRONIC DEVICE FOR CONTROLLING INPUT MODE ACCORDING TO FOLDING ANGLE, AND METHOD THEREFOR

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a technology that allows an electronic device to determine the folding angle between itself and an external device connected to it, and based on this angle, determine whether to display a user interface on a display or block an input signal received through a connector.

  • The technology involves the use of at least one motion sensor in the electronic device to acquire motion data about its own motion.
  • The electronic device also acquires motion data about the motion of an external device through a connector.
  • By analyzing the first and second motion data, the technology determines the folding angle between the electronic device and the external device.
  • Based on the determined folding angle, the technology sets an input mode to either display a user interface on a display or block an input signal received through the connector.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be applied in foldable devices, such as smartphones or tablets, where the folding angle between the device and an external accessory can affect the user interface or input functionality.
  • It can also be used in wearable devices, such as smartwatches, where the folding angle between the device and a wristband or strap can determine the display or input behavior.

Problems Solved

  • This technology solves the problem of determining the appropriate input mode for an electronic device based on its folding angle with an external device.
  • It eliminates the need for manual configuration or adjustment of input settings when connecting or disconnecting external devices.

Benefits

  • The technology provides a seamless and automatic adjustment of the user interface and input behavior based on the folding angle, enhancing user experience.
  • It simplifies the user interaction with the electronic device by automatically adapting to the connected external device.
  • The technology improves the overall usability and versatility of foldable and wearable devices.

Original Abstract Submitted

At least one processor included in an electronic device can acquire first motion data about the motion of the electronic device through at least one motion sensor, acquire second motion data about a motion of an external device through a connector included in the electronic device, determine, on the basis of the first motion data and the second motion data, the folding angle between the electronic device and the external device connected to the electronic device, and determine, on the basis of the determined folding angle, an input mode that sets whether to display a user interface on a display or whether to block an input signal received through the connector. Various other embodiments identified through the specification are possible.
