MAKE-BEFORE-BREAK (MBB) HANDOVER OPERATIONS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18158442 titled 'MAKE-BEFORE-BREAK (MBB) HANDOVER OPERATIONS

Simplified Explanation

The abstract of this patent application describes a technology related to wireless communications, specifically focusing on performing a handover on a per-data radio bearer (DRB) basis. The disclosure explains how a user equipment (UE) can indicate its make-before-break (MBB) handover capability to a source network entity, which supports MBB handovers for one or more DRBs identified by the source network entity. The disclosure also mentions the reception of configuration information from the source network entity, which specifies the DRBs supported for the MBB handover from the source network entity to a target network entity.

  • The patent application focuses on performing handovers in wireless communications.
  • It introduces the concept of make-before-break (MBB) handover capability of a UE.
  • The technology allows the UE to indicate its MBB handover capability to the source network entity.
  • The MBB handover capability supports MBB handovers for one or more DRBs identified by the source network entity.
  • The disclosure also includes the reception of configuration information for a handover from the source network entity to a target network entity.
  • The configuration information specifies the DRBs supported for the MBB handover.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be applied in various wireless communication systems, such as cellular networks.
  • It can improve the efficiency and reliability of handovers between different network entities.
  • The patent application's concepts can be implemented in 5G networks or future wireless communication technologies.

Problems Solved

  • The technology addresses the challenge of performing handovers in wireless communication systems.
  • It solves the problem of ensuring a smooth transition of data radio bearers (DRBs) during handovers.
  • The MBB handover capability allows for uninterrupted communication during the handover process.

Benefits

  • The technology provides a more efficient and reliable handover process for wireless communication systems.
  • It ensures a seamless transition of data radio bearers, minimizing disruptions in communication.
  • The MBB handover capability improves the overall user experience by reducing service interruptions during handovers.

Original Abstract Submitted

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to wireless communications, and more particularly, to performing a handover on a per-data radio bearer (DRB) basis. In some examples, the disclosure is directed to indicating, to a source network entity, a make-before-break (MBB) handover capability of the UE, the MBB handover capability supporting MBB handovers for one or more DRBs identified by the source network entity. In some examples, the disclosure describes receiving, from the source network entity, configuration information for a handover from the source network entity to a target network entity, the configuration information identifying the one or more DRBs supported for the MBB handover.
