Bootstrapping Devices on a Network - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18152206 titled 'Bootstrapping Devices on a Network
Simplified Explanation
The abstract describes methods for operating a device and managing bootstrapping of devices in a network.
- The method for operating a device involves computing a derivative of a secret shared between the device and a server entity of the network.
- It then generates a temporary bootstrap URI by combining the computed derivative with a static bootstrap URI for the network.
- Finally, it sends a bootstrap request to the temporary bootstrap URI.
- The method for managing bootstrapping involves generating temporary bootstrap URIs for devices that can connect to the network.
- It updates a network DNS registry to map the generated temporary bootstrap URIs to the IP address of a bootstrap server instance or a bootstrap load balancer.
Potential applications of this technology:
- Device management in a networked environment.
- Secure bootstrapping of devices in a network.
- Efficient management of bootstrap requests and load balancing.
Problems solved by this technology:
- Simplifies the process of bootstrapping devices in a network.
- Enhances security by using shared secrets and temporary bootstrap URIs.
- Improves scalability and efficiency by utilizing load balancers and updating DNS registry.
Benefits of this technology:
- Streamlines the device bootstrapping process.
- Enhances security and confidentiality of shared secrets.
- Improves network management and scalability.
- Enables efficient load balancing of bootstrap requests.
Original Abstract Submitted
Methods for operating a device and for managing bootstrapping of devices are disclosed. The method () for operating a device comprises computing () a derivative of a secret shared between the device and a server entity of a network, generating () a temporary bootstrap URI by combining at least a part of the computed derivative with a static bootstrap URI for the network, and sending () a bootstrap request to the temporary bootstrap URI. The method for managing bootstrapping of devices comprises generating temporary bootstrap URIs corresponding to devices operable to connect to a network, and updating a network DNS registry to map the generated temporary bootstrap URIs to the IP address of at least one of a bootstrap server instance reachable via the network and/or a bootstrap load balancer. Also disclosed are a device, a bootstrap load balancer, a bootstrap server, and a computer program.
