APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR SUPPORTING CONTINUITY OF EDGE COMPUTING SERVICE IN MOBILE NETWORK - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18150646 titled 'APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR SUPPORTING CONTINUITY OF EDGE COMPUTING SERVICE IN MOBILE NETWORK

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method and apparatus for providing an edge computing service to a User Equipment (UE) in a mobile communication network. The method involves receiving a command from an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) to modify a Packet Data Unit (PDU) session for the Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) service, along with the valid time of the session.

  • The method includes transmitting a negative acknowledgment (NACK) message to the AMF, indicating a wait for an acknowledgment (ACK) when the application context corresponding to the PDU session can be relocated within the valid time of the session.
  • The method also involves sending an application context relocation request message to the MEC system providing the service.
  • Finally, an ACK is transmitted to the AMF in response to receiving an application context relocation complete message from the MEC system. Both the PDU session modification command and the PDU session modification command NACK message are Network Access Stratum (NAS) messages.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Edge computing services in mobile communication networks.
  • Enabling efficient and seamless migration of application contexts in a mobile network.
  • Supporting real-time and low-latency services for User Equipment (UE).

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Simplifies the process of modifying a PDU session for an edge computing service.
  • Ensures that the application context corresponding to the PDU session is relocated within the valid time of the session.
  • Facilitates efficient communication between the AMF, MEC system, and UE.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Enables the provision of edge computing services to UEs in a mobile communication network.
  • Improves the efficiency and reliability of modifying PDU sessions for MEC services.
  • Supports seamless migration of application contexts, ensuring uninterrupted service for UEs.
  • Enhances the overall performance and user experience of edge computing services.

Original Abstract Submitted

Methods and an apparatus for providing an edge computing service to a UE in a mobile communication network and. The method comprises: receiving, from an AMF, a PDU session modification command including first information instructing modification of a PUD session for the MEC service and valid time of the PDU session; transmitting, to the AMF, a PDU session modification command NACK message including second information indicating a wait until transmission of an ACK, when relocation of an application context corresponding to the PDU session is possible within the valid time of the PDU session; transmitting, to an MEC system providing the service, an application context relocation request message; and transmitting, to the AMF, a PDU session modification command ACK in response to receiving an application context relocation complete message from the MEC system, wherein the PDU session modification command and the PDU session modification command NACK message are NAS messages.
