ELECTRONIC DEVICE COMPRISING FLEXIBLE DISPLAY - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18146888 titled 'ELECTRONIC DEVICE COMPRISING FLEXIBLE DISPLAY

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes an electronic device with a sliding mechanism and a flexible display. Here are the key points:

  • The electronic device consists of a first housing and a second housing that can slide in a specific direction.
  • The first housing has a space formed through one side surface, with two other side surfaces extending perpendicular and parallel to the first side surface.
  • The second housing is slidably connected to the first housing and has its own space.
  • A bendable member is connected to the first housing and can partially fit into the second space when the device is in a closed position.
  • The bendable member and the first housing form the same plane when the device is in an open position.
  • The flexible display is divided into a visible portion and a hidden portion.
  • The visible portion is visible from the outside when the device is closed, while the hidden portion extends into the second space through the bendable member.
  • When the device is closed, the first and third side surfaces can be hidden inside the second space.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Smartphones or tablets with a sliding mechanism for additional screen space.
  • Portable gaming devices with a flexible display that can be expanded for a larger gaming experience.
  • E-readers with a hidden portion of the display that can be revealed for note-taking or highlighting.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Limited screen space on electronic devices can be expanded by using a sliding mechanism and a flexible display.
  • The hidden portion of the display allows for additional functionality without compromising the device's compactness when closed.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Provides a compact and portable electronic device that can be expanded when needed.
  • Offers a larger screen size for enhanced user experience.
  • Enables additional functionality without sacrificing the device's form factor.

Original Abstract Submitted

An electronic device is provided. The electronic device includes a first housing which includes a first space formed through a first side surface, a second side surface extending in the direction perpendicular to the first side surface, and a third side surface extending from the second side surface to be parallel with the first side surface, a second housing which is slidably coupled to the first housing in a first direction and which includes a second space, a bendable member, which is connected to the first housing, is at least partially accommodated in the second space in a slide-in state, and forms at least partially the same plane with the first housing in a slide-out state, and a flexible display, which includes, in the slide-in state, a first portion arranged to be visible from the outside and a second portion that extends from the first portion and is accommodated in the second space through the bendable member so as not to be at least partially visible from the outside, wherein, in the slide-in state, the first side surface and the third side surface can be accommodated in the second space so as not to be visible from the outside.
