METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR REUSING WASTEWATER - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18134906 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR REUSING WASTEWATER

Simplified Explanation

The disclosed patent application describes a method and apparatus for reusing wastewater. The method includes the following steps:

1. Generating a mixed wastewater by combining different types of wastewater. 2. Performing a first purification by passing the mixed wastewater through a flocculation-sedimentation unit, which helps in separating solid particles from the wastewater. 3. Performing a second purification by passing the effluent of the flocculation-sedimentation unit through a membrane bioreactor (MBR). The MBR uses a membrane to filter out remaining impurities and microorganisms. 4. Performing a third purification by passing the effluent of the MBR through a reverse-osmosis membrane unit. Reverse osmosis is a process that uses a semi-permeable membrane to remove dissolved salts and other contaminants. 5. Reusing the effluent of the reverse-osmosis membrane unit as cooling water or industrial water.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Water recycling in industrial processes: The purified wastewater can be used as cooling water or industrial water, reducing the need for fresh water and minimizing water consumption in industrial operations.
  • Agricultural irrigation: The treated wastewater can be used for irrigation purposes, providing a sustainable water source for agriculture.
  • Municipal water supply: The purified wastewater can be further treated and used as a source of drinking water, helping to address water scarcity issues.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Water scarcity: The method allows for the reuse of wastewater, reducing the dependence on freshwater sources and alleviating water scarcity issues.
  • Environmental pollution: By treating and reusing wastewater, the technology helps in reducing the discharge of pollutants into the environment, improving water quality.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Water conservation: The method promotes the efficient use of water resources by recycling and reusing wastewater.
  • Cost savings: Reusing wastewater can lead to cost savings by reducing the need for freshwater sources and lowering wastewater treatment expenses.
  • Environmental sustainability: The technology contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing water pollution and conserving natural resources.

Original Abstract Submitted

Disclosed are a method and apparatus for reusing wastewater. The method for reusing wastewater disclosed herein includes: generating a mixed wastewater by mixing multiple types of wastewater (S20); performing a first purification by passing the mixed wastewater through a flocculation-sedimentation unit (S40); performing a second purification by passing an effluent of the flocculation-sedimentation unit through a membrane bioreactor (MBR) (S60); performing a third purification by passing an effluent of the MBR through a reverse-osmosis membrane unit (S80); and reusing an effluent of the reverse-osmosis membrane unit as cooling water or industrial water (S100).
