SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR SUPPORTING MULTI-PATH AND/OR MULTI-MODE NMVE OVER FABRICS DEVICES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18106477 titled 'SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR SUPPORTING MULTI-PATH AND/OR MULTI-MODE NMVE OVER FABRICS DEVICES

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a system that includes a fabric switch, a midplane, and multiple device ports for connecting storage devices to the fabric switch. The system also includes a network switch and a PCIe switch for transporting network signals and PCIe signals, respectively. The storage devices can be configured in multiple modes based on a protocol established over a fabric connection between the system and the storage device.

  • The system includes a fabric switch, midplane, and device ports for connecting storage devices to the fabric switch.
  • The fabric switch has a motherboard, a baseboard management controller (BMC), a network switch, and a PCIe switch.
  • The network switch is used to transport network signals, while the PCIe switch is used to transport PCIe signals.
  • The device ports connect the storage devices to the motherboard of the fabric switch over the midplane.
  • The device ports carry both the network signals and the PCIe signals over the midplane.
  • The storage devices can be configured in multiple modes based on a protocol established over a fabric connection between the system and the storage device.

Potential Applications

  • Data centers and server farms
  • Cloud computing infrastructure
  • High-performance computing systems

Problems Solved

  • Simplifies the connectivity and configuration of storage devices in a system
  • Enables efficient transport of network and PCIe signals over a fabric connection
  • Provides flexibility in configuring storage devices based on established protocols

Benefits

  • Simplified management and control of storage devices
  • Efficient transport of network and PCIe signals over the fabric connection

Original Abstract Submitted

A system includes a fabric switch including a motherboard, a baseboard management controller (BMC), a network switch configured to transport network signals, and a PCIe switch configured to transport PCIe signals; a midplane; and a plurality of device ports. Each of the plurality of device ports is configured to connect a storage device to the motherboard of the fabric switch over the midplane and carry the network signals and the PCIe signals over the midplane. The storage device is configurable in multiple modes based a protocol established over a fabric connection between the system and the storage device.
