METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PATCH BOOK-BASED ENCODING AND DECODING OF VIDEO DATA - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18104984 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PATCH BOOK-BASED ENCODING AND DECODING OF VIDEO DATA

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method and apparatus for encoding and decoding video data using a patch book-based approach. Here is a simplified explanation of the abstract:

  • The method involves decoding video data by determining a patch book list for a block of video data.
  • The patch book list contains entries that represent subsets of pixels in the block with corresponding color values.
  • The method further involves determining one or more index values for the block, where each index value indicates a patch book entry.
  • The index values are used to reconstruct subsets of pixels in the block based on the patch book list.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Video compression: The patch book-based encoding and decoding method can be used to compress video data, reducing file sizes and improving transmission efficiency.
  • Video streaming: By efficiently encoding and decoding video data, this technology can enhance the quality and speed of video streaming services.
  • Video editing: The method can be applied in video editing software to improve the processing and manipulation of video data.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Efficient encoding: The patch book-based approach allows for efficient encoding of video data by representing subsets of pixels with corresponding color values.
  • Reduced file sizes: By encoding video data using a patch book list and index values, the resulting files can be significantly smaller, saving storage space.
  • Improved decoding: The method enables accurate reconstruction of subsets of pixels in the block, resulting in high-quality video playback.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved compression: The patch book-based encoding and decoding method can achieve higher compression ratios compared to traditional methods, leading to reduced bandwidth requirements.
  • Enhanced video quality: By accurately reconstructing subsets of pixels, the method can preserve the quality of the video data during decoding.
  • Faster processing: The patch book-based approach allows for faster encoding and decoding of video data, enabling real-time applications such as video streaming.

Original Abstract Submitted

Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for patch book-based encoding and decoding of video data. A video data decoding method comprises the steps of: determining a patch book list for a block of video data; and determining one or more index values for the block. Each of the index values indicates a patch book entry having color values corresponding to a subset of pixels in the block, among patch book entries of the patch book list. The decoding method further comprises a step of reconstructing subsets of the pixels on the basis of the patch book list and the index values for the block.
