APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING A VEHICLE AND METHOD THEREOF - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18104641 titled 'APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING A VEHICLE AND METHOD THEREOF

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a vehicle control apparatus and method that includes multiple controllers for ensuring safety and autonomous driving functions of a vehicle.

  • First controller: Performs control for safety of the vehicle.
  • Second controller: Mainly performs determination and control of autonomous driving.
  • Third controller: Subordinately performs determination and control of autonomous driving, and takes over if the second controller fails.
  • Third controller determines if the second controller fails, and if so, takes over autonomous driving functions and informs the first controller.
      1. Potential Applications
  • Autonomous vehicles
  • Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)
  • Vehicle safety systems
      1. Problems Solved
  • Ensures continuous autonomous driving functionality even if one controller fails.
  • Enhances safety and reliability of autonomous driving systems.
      1. Benefits
  • Redundancy in control systems for increased safety.
  • Seamless transition of control functions in case of controller failure.
  • Improved reliability of autonomous driving technology.

Original Abstract Submitted

A vehicle control apparatus and a method thereof include a first controller configured to perform control for safety of a vehicle; a second controller configured to mainly perform determination and control of autonomous driving of the vehicle; and a third controller configured to subordinately perform the determination and the control of the autonomous driving of the vehicle, wherein the third controller is configured to determine whether the second controller fails, when the second controller fails, to change a control subject for performing an autonomous driving function from the second controller to the third controller, and to transmit control subject change information to the first controller.
