USE OF CHROMA QUANTIZATION PARAMETER OFFSETS IN DEBLOCKING - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18099330 titled 'USE OF CHROMA QUANTIZATION PARAMETER OFFSETS IN DEBLOCKING

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes innovations in the use of chroma quantization parameter (QP) offsets for determining a control parameter for deblock filtering in video encoding and decoding processes.

  • The encoder sets a picture-level chroma QP offset and slice-level chroma QP offset for encoding a slice of a picture.
  • The encoder performs deblock filtering of at least part of the slice, considering only the picture-level chroma QP offset when deriving a control parameter.
  • The encoder outputs a bitstream including the encoded content.
  • The decoder sets a picture-level chroma QP offset and slice-level chroma QP offset for decoding a slice of a picture.
  • The decoder derives a control parameter for deblock filtering, considering only the picture-level chroma QP offset.

Potential Applications

  • Video encoding and decoding processes
  • Multimedia streaming
  • Video compression technologies

Problems Solved

  • Efficient control parameter derivation for deblock filtering in video encoding and decoding
  • Improved picture quality and reduction of artifacts in encoded and decoded video content

Benefits

  • Enhanced video quality with reduced artifacts
  • Improved efficiency in video encoding and decoding processes
  • Better control over deblock filtering parameters for different slices of a picture.

Original Abstract Submitted

Innovations in use of chroma quantization parameter (“QP”) offsets when determining a control parameter for deblock filtering. For example, as part of encoding, an encoder sets a picture-level chroma QP offset and slice-level chroma QP offset for encoding of a slice of a picture. The encoder also performs deblock filtering of at least part of the slice, where derivation of a control parameter considers only the picture-level chroma QP offset. The encoder outputs at least part of a bitstream including the encoded content. As part of decoding, a corresponding decoder sets a picture-level chroma QP offset and a slice-level chroma QP offset for decoding of a slice of a picture, but derivation of a control parameter for deblock filtering considers only the picture-level chroma QP offset.
