Methods, Apparatus and Machine-Readable Mediums Related to Wireless Access in Communication Networks - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18098407 titled 'Methods, Apparatus and Machine-Readable Mediums Related to Wireless Access in Communication Networks

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes methods and apparatus for wireless access in communication networks that include both radio access network nodes and wireless light communication network nodes. The invention focuses on selecting a transmit or receive beam for communication with a wireless device in the network.

  • The method involves a radio access network node with multiple antenna elements that can provide multiple transmit or receive beams.
  • The method starts by obtaining information about the wireless light communication (LC) network node to which the wireless device is connected.
  • Based on the identified LC network node, a subset of transmit or receive beams is selected.
  • A beam-sweeping procedure is then initiated using the subset of beams to choose the best transmit or receive beam for communication with the wireless device.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be applied in various wireless communication networks that include both radio access network nodes and wireless light communication network nodes.
  • It can be used in scenarios where wireless devices need to connect to both radio access and light communication networks simultaneously.

Problems Solved

  • The invention addresses the challenge of selecting the most suitable transmit or receive beam for communication with a wireless device in a network that includes both radio access and light communication nodes.
  • It solves the problem of efficiently utilizing the multiple antenna elements available in the radio access network node.

Benefits

  • The method allows for improved wireless communication performance by selecting the optimal beam for communication with the wireless device.
  • It enhances the efficiency of the radio access network node by utilizing the subset of transmit or receive beams based on the identified LC network node.

Original Abstract Submitted

Methods, apparatus and non-transitory machine-readable mediums are provided for wireless access in communications networks comprising radio access network nodes and wireless light communication network nodes. In one embodiment, a method is performed by a radio access network node for selecting a transmit or receive beam for communication with a wireless device in a communication network. The radio access network node comprises a plurality of antenna elements configurable to provide a plurality of transmit or receive beams. The communication network further comprises one or more wireless light communication, LC, network nodes. The method comprises: obtaining information identifying a wireless LC network node to which the wireless device is connected; based on the identified wireless LC network node, selecting a subset of the plurality of transmit or receive beams; and initiating a beam-sweeping procedure using the subset of transmit or receive beams to select a transmit or receive beam for communication with the wireless device.
