HYDROGEN GAS PRODUCING APPARATUS USING PHOTOCATALYST - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18098292 titled 'HYDROGEN GAS PRODUCING APPARATUS USING PHOTOCATALYST

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a miniaturized apparatus for producing hydrogen gas from water using a photocatalyst. The apparatus aims to maintain or improve the efficiency of hydrogen gas production while reducing its size.

  • The apparatus includes a container that holds water, a photocatalyst member immersed in the water, a light source that emits light to activate the photocatalyst, and a heat exchange device that transfers waste heat from the light source to the water in the container.
  • The photocatalyst generates excited electrons and positive holes when exposed to light, leading to a decomposition reaction of water and the production of hydrogen gas.
  • The waste heat from the light source warms the water on the photocatalyst, enhancing the efficiency of the decomposition reaction.

Potential Applications

  • Miniaturized hydrogen gas production systems for various applications, such as fuel cells, energy storage, and clean energy generation.

Problems Solved

  • Miniaturization of hydrogen gas production apparatus while maintaining or improving efficiency.
  • Utilization of waste heat from the light source to enhance the decomposition reaction of water.

Benefits

  • Compact and efficient hydrogen gas production system.
  • Improved utilization of waste heat, leading to higher production efficiency.
  • Potential for clean and sustainable energy generation.

Original Abstract Submitted

In an apparatus producing hydrogen gas by the decomposition reaction of water using photocatalyst, its miniaturization is achieved while suppressing the decrease of production efficiency of hydrogen gas as low as possible or improving the efficiency. The apparatus comprises a container portion receiving water W; a photocatalyst member immersed in the water, having photocatalyst which generates excited electrons and positive holes when irradiated with light, causes a decomposition reaction of the water and generates hydrogen gas; a light source emitting the light irradiated to the photocatalyst member; and a heat exchange device conducting waste heat of the light source to the water in the container portion; wherein the water to be decomposed on the photocatalyst member in the container portion is warmed by the waste heat of the light source by the heat exchange device.
