METHODS FOR INTEGRITY PROTECTION OF USER PLANE DATA - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18095607 titled 'METHODS FOR INTEGRITY PROTECTION OF USER PLANE DATA

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for operating a User Equipment (UE) that connects to a communication network. The method involves indicating to the communication network the supported mode of Integrity Protection for User Plane (IPUP) during registration. The IPUP mode can be one of three options:

  • Use of Integrity Protection for User Plane data exchanged with the UE
  • Non-use of Integrity Protection for User Plane data exchanged with the UE
  • Use of Integrity Protection for User Plane data, and non-use of Confidentiality Protection for User Plane data

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Mobile communication networks
  • Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Wireless communication systems

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of user plane data exchanged between the UE and the communication network
  • Providing flexibility in choosing the level of protection for user plane data

Benefits of this technology:

  • Enhanced security and privacy for user plane data
  • Customizable protection levels based on specific requirements and network conditions
  • Improved efficiency in resource allocation and network performance

Original Abstract Submitted

A method for operating a User Equipment (UE) is disclosed, the UE configured to connect to a communication network. The method comprises: indicating to the communication network an Integrity Protection for User Plane (IPUP) mode supported by the UE when requesting registration with the communication network. The IPUP mode comprises one of: use of Integrity Protection for User Plane data exchanged with the UE, non-use of Integrity Protection for User Plane data exchanged with the UE, or use of Integrity Protection for User Plane data, and non-use of Confidentiality Protection for User Plane data.
