NETWORK INCIDENT ROOT-CAUSE ANALYSIS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18094379 titled 'NETWORK INCIDENT ROOT-CAUSE ANALYSIS

Simplified Explanation

The method described in the patent application involves identifying root causes of incidents within a network by analyzing the dependencies between neighboring network entities using probabilistic analysis.

  • The method receives a graph of a portion of the network related to a specific network entity for which an incident is reported.
  • The graph specifies dependencies between neighboring network entities in the network.
  • Probabilistic analysis is used to determine if adjusting the metrics of a network entity affects the metrics of the particular network entity that is experiencing issues.
  • The method reports a subset of network entities with metrics that could potentially be root causes of the incident.

Potential Applications

This technology could be applied in:

Unanswered Questions

How does this method handle complex network topologies with multiple dependencies?

The patent application does not provide specific details on how the method handles complex network topologies with multiple dependencies. Further information on the scalability and adaptability of the method to different network structures would be beneficial.

What is the impact of false positives in identifying root causes of network incidents?

The patent application does not address the potential impact of false positives in identifying root causes of network incidents. Understanding the accuracy and reliability of the method in pinpointing the actual root causes is essential for effective incident response and network management.

Original Abstract Submitted

Some embodiments provide a method for identifying root causes of incidents within a network. The method receives a graph of a portion of the network related to a particular network entity for which an incident is reported. The graph specifies dependencies between neighboring network entities in the network. The method uses probabilistic analysis to determine, for each network entity of a set of network entities represented in the graph, whether adjusting a set of metrics of the entity affects one or more metrics of the particular network entity that have been diagnosed as indicative of a problem. The method reports a subset of the network entities with metrics that affect the one or more metrics of the particular network entity as potential root causes of the incident.
