METHOD AND APPARATUS WITH BATTERY SHORT DETECTION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18086173 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS WITH BATTERY SHORT DETECTION

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes methods and apparatuses for detecting battery short circuits. Here is a simplified explanation of the abstract:

  • The method involves measuring a battery over a specific time period, either during charging or discharging.
  • A battery model is used to estimate the expected behavior of the battery during the same time period.
  • A resistance error parameter is determined by comparing the measured data with the estimated data.
  • If the resistance error parameter exceeds a predefined threshold, it indicates a battery short circuit condition.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Battery management systems in electric vehicles or hybrid vehicles.
  • Power storage systems for renewable energy sources.
  • Portable electronic devices with rechargeable batteries.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Detecting battery short circuits can prevent damage to the battery and ensure safe operation.
  • Early detection of short circuits can prevent accidents or fires caused by faulty batteries.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved safety by detecting battery short circuits in real-time.
  • Prevents damage to batteries and extends their lifespan.
  • Enables efficient and reliable operation of battery-powered devices.

Original Abstract Submitted

Methods and apparatuses with battery short circuit detection are provided. A short circuit detecting method includes determining measurement data by measuring a battery for a target timespan including a battery charging timespan or a battery discharging timespan, determining estimation data of the battery for the target timespan using a battery model that simulates the battery to determine the estimation data, determining a resistance error parameter of the battery based on the measurement data and the estimation data, and determining that a battery short circuit condition is satisfied based on a result of comparing the resistance error parameter and a short circuit threshold value.
