METHOD AND USER EQUIPMENT FOR PREVENTING CALL DROP IN A WIRELESS NETWORK - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18076854 titled 'METHOD AND USER EQUIPMENT FOR PREVENTING CALL DROP IN A WIRELESS NETWORK

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for handling an ongoing call in a wireless network when transitioning from a 4G network to a 5G network. The method involves detecting the change in network, determining if the UE or the 5G network supports a VoNR call (voice over new radio), and deciding whether to delay sending a measurement report or send it immediately based on the support for VoNR.

  • The method is specifically designed for handling ongoing calls in a wireless network when transitioning from 4G to 5G.
  • It involves initiating a VoLTE call in a 4G network and detecting the configuration of an inter radio access technology (I-RAT) measurement indicating a change to a 5G network.
  • The method determines if the UE or the 5G network supports a VoNR call with a 5G cell in the 5G network.
  • If either the UE or the 5G network does not support VoNR, the method delays sending a measurement report until the VoLTE call is completed.
  • If both the UE and the 5G network support VoNR, the method sends the measurement report immediately for the 5G cell.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Seamless transition from 4G to 5G networks during ongoing calls.
  • Efficient handling of voice calls in mixed 4G and 5G network environments.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Ensures uninterrupted voice calls during network transitions.
  • Optimizes network resources by delaying measurement reports when VoNR is not supported.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Enhanced user experience with uninterrupted voice calls.
  • Efficient utilization of network resources.
  • Smooth transition between different generations of wireless networks.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method of handling an ongoing call performed by a UE in a wireless network is provided. The method includes initiating a voice over long term evolution (VoLTE) call in a 4th generation (4G) network, detecting that a 5th generation (5G) network entity has configured an inter radio access technology (I-RAT) measurement indicating a change from the 4G network to a 5G network based on identification of the 5G network by the UE, determining whether at least one of the UE or the 5G network does not support a voice over new radio (VoNR) call with a 5G cell in the 5G network, and performing one of delaying sending a measurement report until the VoLTE call is completed in response to determining that the at least one of the UE or the 5G network does not support the VoNR call, or sending the measurement report immediately for the 5G cell in response to determining that both the UE and the 5G network support the VoNR call.
