METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING A REMOTE DEVICE IN AN INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) ENVIRONMENT - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18074073 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING A REMOTE DEVICE IN AN INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) ENVIRONMENT

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for controlling a remote device in an Internet of Things (IoT) environment. Here are the key points:

  • The method involves identifying a primary IoT device in one location and at least one secondary IoT device in another location.
  • It determines if the user is currently in the second location and intends to control the primary IoT device from there.
  • The method then reconfigures the secondary IoT device's default functionality to allow the user to use it as a user interface for controlling the primary IoT device from the second location.

Potential Applications

This technology has potential applications in various fields, including:

  • Smart homes: Users can control different devices in their homes remotely from any location.
  • Industrial automation: Operators can control and monitor machinery and equipment from a central location.
  • Healthcare: Medical professionals can remotely control and monitor medical devices and equipment.
  • Energy management: Users can manage and control energy consumption in their homes or buildings from anywhere.

Problems Solved

This technology addresses several problems in IoT device control:

  • Remote control: It allows users to control a primary IoT device from a different location using a secondary IoT device as a user interface.
  • User convenience: Users can easily control devices without the need for physical proximity to the primary IoT device.
  • Flexibility: The reconfigurable secondary IoT device provides flexibility in controlling different devices from various locations.

Benefits

The use of this technology offers several benefits:

  • Remote access: Users can control and monitor IoT devices from anywhere, providing convenience and flexibility.
  • Cost-effective: It eliminates the need for multiple dedicated user interfaces by repurposing secondary IoT devices.
  • Enhanced user experience: The reconfigured secondary IoT device provides a familiar and intuitive interface for controlling the primary IoT device.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method for controlling a remote device in an Internet of Things (IoT) environment is provided. The method includes: identifying a primary IoT device in a first location; identifying at least one secondary IoT device in a second location; determining that a user is currently in the second location; determining an intent of the user to control the primary IoT device from the second location; and reconfiguring at least one default functionality of a secondary IoT device, among the at least one secondary IoT device, such that the secondary IoT device is operable by the user as a user interface to control the primary IoT device from the secondary location.
