The present disclosure relates to a pre-5-Generation (5G) or 5G communication system to be provided for supporting higher data rates Beyond 4-Generation (4G) communication system such as Long Term Evolution (LTE). The disclosure provides a user equipment and a method performed by the user equipment. The user equipment and the method performed by the user equipment according to the various aspects of the disclosure, can obtain a finer beam through measurement of a finer beam reference signal configured after receiving a downlink signal transmitted with a wide beam; and to measure and report the finer beam during one stage of initial access, such as during the procedure of reading system information, scheduling retransmission of message 2, message 4, and even message 3. In addition, it can also receive multiple repetition transmissions of downlink signals to achieve the purpose of coverage enhancement.
