METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR HANDLING LOSSLESS OPERATIONS FOR MBS IN 5G COMMUNICATION NETWORK - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18032382 titled 'METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR HANDLING LOSSLESS OPERATIONS FOR MBS IN 5G COMMUNICATION NETWORK

Simplified Explanation

The present disclosure is about a communication system that supports higher data rates beyond 4G, such as 5G or 6G. It specifically focuses on handling lossless operations for a Multicast Broadcast Service (MBS) in a wireless communication network.

  • The method involves a network entity receiving a PDCP (Packet Data Convergence Protocol) status report from a User Equipment (UE).
  • The PDCP status report includes information about missing Protocol Data Units (PDUs).
  • The missing PDUs are detected during various events like a change in MBS bearer type, MBS data transfer, or a handover procedure involving an MBS bearer.
  • The network entity determines the specific PDCP PDU that needs to be retransmitted to recover the missing PDU.
  • The determined PDCP PDU is then retransmitted by the network entity to the UE over a PTP (Point-to-Point) path.
  • This method ensures reliability and efficient retransmission during a PTM-PTP (Packet Transfer Mode-Point-to-Point) switching, handover, and normal operation for a New Radio (NR) MBS.
  • The proposed method enhances the reception performance of a UE MBS service.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • 5G or 6G communication systems that require higher data rates and support MBS.
  • Wireless communication networks that utilize MBS for multicast or broadcast services.
  • Networks where lossless operations and efficient retransmission are crucial for reliable data transmission.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Lossless operations for MBS in a wireless communication network.
  • Efficient retransmission of missing PDUs to ensure reliable data transmission.
  • Handling MBS bearer type changes, MBS data transfer, and handover procedures involving MBS bearers.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Enhanced reception performance for UE MBS services.
  • Improved reliability in data transmission for MBS in a wireless communication network.
  • Efficient retransmission during PTM-PTP switching, handover, and normal operation for NR MBS.

Original Abstract Submitted

The present disclosure relates to a 5G communication system or a 6G communication system for supporting higher data rates beyond a 4G communication system such as long term evolution (LTE). Embodiments herein disclose methods for handling lossless operations for a MBS in a wireless communication network (). The method includes receiving, by a network entity (), a PDCP status report from a UE (). The PDCP status report includes missing PDU. The missing PDU is detected during at least one of a MBS bearer type change, a MBS data transfer and a handover procedure involving a MBS bearer. Further, the method includes determining, by the network entity (), a PDCP PDU for retransmission of the missing PDU. Further, the method includes retransmitting, by the network entity (), the determined PDCP PDU to the UE () over a PTP path. The method can be used to is enable reliability with efficient retransmission during a PTM-PTP switching, a handover and a normal operation for a NR MBS. Based on the proposed method, a UE MBS service reception performance is enhanced.
