RS CONFIGURATION AND MANAGEMENT - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18006937 titled 'RS CONFIGURATION AND MANAGEMENT

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for requesting a reference signal (RS) in a wireless communication system. Here is a simplified explanation of the abstract:

  • The method starts with a user equipment (UE) sending a first on-demand RS request in response to a positioning request.
  • The UE obtains a timer value that represents a threshold amount of time.
  • If the UE does not receive the RS or decode an RS configuration message within the threshold time, it sends a second on-demand RS request.
  • The second RS request is also triggered if a higher priority positioning request is received before the threshold time expires after sending the first RS request.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Wireless communication systems that require accurate positioning information.
  • Mobile devices and applications that rely on precise location data.
  • Internet of Things (IoT) devices that need to determine their location in real-time.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Ensures that the UE receives the necessary RS for accurate positioning.
  • Addresses situations where the RS is not received or decoded within a specific time frame.
  • Handles cases where higher priority positioning requests are received before the RS is obtained.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improves the reliability and accuracy of positioning information in wireless communication systems.
  • Reduces the chances of missing or delayed RS requests.
  • Enhances the overall performance and efficiency of location-based services.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method of requesting a reference signal includes sending, from a user equipment, a first on-demand reference signal (RS) request for an RS in response to a first positioning request; obtaining, at the user equipment, a first timer value indicative of a first threshold amount of time; sending, from the user equipment, a second on-demand RS request in response to either: the first threshold amount of time passing after sending the first on-demand RS request without at least one of receiving the RS at the user equipment or decoding an RS configuration message at the user equipment or receiving, at the user equipment, a second positioning request, having a higher priority than the first positioning request, before passage of the first threshold amount of time after sending the first on-demand RS request.
